A short trip by coach from Whistler to Horseshoe Bay (North of Vancouver) - then coach and all onto the ferry for the 90 minute crossing to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. On our way south to Victoria we stopped for lunch at the quaint village of Chemainus, and being a public holiday most shops were shut. Still, it was nice to get some feel for life in Canada away from the usual tourist spots.
We found Victoria pleasant enough but did not consider it a highlight. We certainly did not find it 'more British than the British' as we had been told. For Canadians it is a place to retire to as the weather is quite mild with winter maximums of between +2 and +11 degrees Centigrade (everything is relative).
Having said that we found Butchart Gardens amazing. Even if you are not a gardener it was certainly grand to see the feast of colour and garden design. The sunken garden in particular is even more amazing when you realise that it is situated on a disused quarry. The next day our ferry trip back to Vancouver was on a different route leaving from Sidney and winding through the very pleasant smaller islands just off the east coast of Vancouver Island.
And now we go from a ferry to a cruise ship for our Alaskan cruise.
