Banff is stunning! The Cascade Mountain dominates the townscape but there are mountains surrounding the town making for a beautiful setting. Apparently it thrives all year round, with ski and snow sports in Winter, conventions and conferences in Spring and Autumn, and many tourists in Summer. There are fabulous walking trails, a very interesting ranch experience, a gondola ride to the top of the mountain providing gorgeous photo opportunities and the world famous Banff Springs Hotel. The town was identified as a tourist destination following the linking of the East and West coasts by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) and thus identified as revenue making for the CPR who encouraged the fledgling Canadian government to set aside land to become what is now known as the Banff National Park. (The third in the world after Yosemite, and the Royal National Park in Sydney.)
It was great to have a full day here and do our own thing. On one of our walks Bill saw an Elk (with a good set of antlers) which walked into the forest and was instantly lost - the only thing that gave it away was the ears twitching. This was only a couple of hundred metres from the town, and they are known to go right into town.
