In the late afternoon we left Bath and drove the hour or so to Cardiff, on the way crossing the Bristol Channel on the 'second Severn crossing' bridge - it is very long! And it cost £6!
Once we settled into our very nice B&B we had an enjoyable pub dinner (pubs in the UK seem to have a much higher standard of meal than what we're used to) and then went for a drive around Cardiff that included the bay area and looking westward across the Bristol Channel out towards the Atlantic ocean.
Our Welsh breakfast included a lava cake that was red, edible seaweed mixed with oats and lightly pan fried, and Welsh cakes which looked like pikelets but were more like a sweet small flat fruity bread. After a nice walk into Cardiff (we're doing lots of walking) we took in the Millenium Stadium and Olympic rings (some Olympic events will be held in Cardiff) and spent a couple of hours touring Cardiff Castle. With a true 2,000 year history and being very well preserved/ restored, we were most impressed with the castle walls, keep, underground air raid shelters and the 'house' with its ornate rooms, furniture and frescos. But time to hurry on as we needed to get to London to return the car (in peak hour traffic) and get the tube to our accommodation (and we did very well, thanks for asking despite us being tube first-timers!)
PSs. 1. Nearer to London we filled the car up, it taking £62 which in Aussie $ we would rather not think about! 2. In the UK distances are in miles and speedos are in miles per hour, but fuel is sold by the litre!
