Kitzingen - Wurzburg 4 May
The last couple of days have seen us visit some quaint historical towns along or near the Main River.
Yesterday, after breakfast a walk into Kitzingen directly from the boat (no bus required). Although steeped in history and being established 1,300 years ago, we were quite interested in the town's more recent happenings. After WWII the Americans stayed on for some 60 years, so in 2006 when they pulled out (10,000 including their families!) the town was left with 21,000 inhabitants and a lot of adjusting to do. Nonetheless, Kitzingen's industries including automotive parts supply, piano manufacturing (Seiler brand) and Huppmann who manufacture brewing facilities for brewing companies around the globe.
In the afternoon Kim and Victoria (from Perth) stayed on board while Bill and Colin visited Rothenburg. This is a very picturesque village that is surrounded by a city wall. You cannot describe this place so looking at our photos is a must, but attractions include the original Christmas store (Kathe Wohlfahrt, now a chain store), and to go to the other extreme the Torture Museum. Bill and Colin walked along the inner wall from where the archers defended in the middle ages. Then back to the Amalegro for another sumptuous dinner.
Wertheim - Miltenberg 5 May
Today we visited Wertheim and Miltenberg both on the Main River as we make our way towards the Danube. Although the weather was a little inclement, this did not detract from our visits. Both are picturesque and in some parts straight from a fairy tale with half timbered houses, stone castles, and historical lane ways and town squares. Both have central market places where town inhabitants make a daily trip to buy their fresh fruit and vegetables.
Wertheim is historically known for its glass blowing and we were entertained last evening on the ship by a local practitioner. It is also at the confluence of the Main and Tauber Rivers which results in regular flooding.
