We had a great last day and evening in BA and were very sad to leave yesterday, not helped by the 5.30am start! Only had a half hour delay with the flight, which was a nice change from Venezuela, and arrived into El Calafate, Patagonia, at midday.
The wind is unforgiving and the temperature was a bit of a shock (it is about 17, so not bad compared with what you have at home, but cold after BA!) El Calafate is a nice town, set up primarily for touring the glaciers. We have a nice alpine hotel and the restaurants are good :o)
Today we had a tour out to the Perito Moreno glacier (see blog entry picture). This was one of the things I was most looking forward to before I left, and it didn't disappoint. The sight of the "white river" of glacial ice in the valley is breathtaking, it is vast and stretches as far as the eye can see. There are intermittent loud crashes as chunks of ice fall off into the lake (most the size of small houses). The only noise I can compare it to is cracks of thunder. Stunning!
I'm no writer so can't do it justice. Also, apologies but the only photos I can load onto this site are ones taken with my ipod touch, not the camera, so sorry about that!
It was good to get fresh air and the heart pumping today, getting ourselves prepared for our day treks in Torres del Paine in a few days. No luxuries of toilets and coffee there! Although we will have a nice hotel to go back to at the end of the day!
Before then however we have another day touring glaciers tomorrow, this time from a catamaran, before leaving Argentina.
