Touched down at Krabi International at midday and were driven rapidly to the Vogue resort and spa in Ao Nang. (Not to be confused with the Amari Vogue resort and spa which cost 3 times as much, although we did. The asiarooms.com special deal did seem a bit too good to be true…..)
Ao Nang is a large resort area nestled at the foot of some impressive sheer limestone cliffs. And I am at no risk of hyperbole when I say it was like being in an oven. We dumped the bags and went on the normal routine to suss out the vicinity. So there were cheap massages, cheap restaurants, and lots of shops selling luxury branded counterfeit goods. There was also an abundance of tailors, all named Armani, Boss, Hilfiger or suchlike. Our personal favourite was Burr Berry.
Whilst on the subject, Annelise has decided that the product of her first effort at dress design is unlikely to adorn her in the public arena and is already up for grabs on ebay.
Ao Nang gets a severely mediocre review in the LP, however we have decided that the author is bit "up himself" and not averse to taking a bung in return for a promising a good write up.
The heat was intolerable so we soon beat a retreat to the room for a siesta……
We headed out to dinner quite early. Despite best efforts we had skipped lunch again. Ambled down to the beach front stilt restaurant quarter and had some fine Tom Yum, fried rice and red curry whilst listening to a soundtrack of waves lapping on sand and jabbering Thai. I was sweating profusely by the end of it, wondering why I feel obliged to try the spice soup and curry combo whenever we pitch up in a new location.
Back on the streets we busied ourselves in the street shops, Found a 100b DVD of the House Bunny so I can finally see the ending. There was the normal selection of LV luggage, Rolexes and Burberry bikinis, mixed in with massage shops, restaurants, tour shops and bars.
When in a strange city in a foreign land you can never go wrong with an Irish Bar. We did: Wild Rovers, despite mention in LP, was shocking and smelled of chips and vinegar. O'Malleys was a big improvement and was showing most of the premiership games, as well as some Indian 20-20 with a nice Shane Warne and Shilpa Shetty interview.
Sadly the Fulham game was not featured but as the joint was entertaining we stayed for a drink. Before full time we settled up and sought a better venue for watching the FA cup final.
Close to the hotel we noticed a busy little side street and checked it out. The first establishment was of a quite rudimentary construction, however they had 10 minutes of the Fulham Game left on the TV. I settled Annelise at the bar and went off to explore. The bars must have been where all the young pretty Thai girls like to go and socialize. They were ever so friendly, with beaming smiles and invitations to go and join them. Their outfits were quite eye-catching too and admirable for their brevity. I speculated that the bars shared an architect/interior designer as they had certain features in common: pool table, TV showing sport, loud music and shiny chrome poles which supported the roof. I told the girls I was flattered but had to rejoin my wife…..
Back at "Lovely Bar" (delusions of grandeur if ever there was) A-lo said she liked the place, it was what we had missed by staying at top end places on remote islands and was keen to stay. I nursed a Singha and observed the circus performances down the street. The barman was sporting an Arsenal shirt and when they lost the lights went on the taps were off. Finally hit the sack at 130…
