Woke to a typical southern California winter morning: not a cloud in the sky and a bit nippy. After breakfast drove down to the beach and rented kayaks at La Jolla. The bay is a nature reserve and apparently there was a good chance of seeing some sea lions and sharks. On dipping her toe in the water, Annelise tried to back out, but Ronan wouldn't have any of it. Risking our marriage, we set out in a double kayak, Mrs W promptly getting soaked as we burst through the 6 inch shore-break. After a couple of whacks (accidental) around the head from my paddle, Annelise soon got into the swing of it and we paddled across the bay to the sea lion colony. Water was crystal clear and could see kelp, sea grass and large orange fish. The sea lions performed well: lots of barking, swimming etc although the adult male thankfully stayed put on his rock. As we paddled back to shore, Ronan was making a lot of shark signals from the beach. At this point, Annelise found some new improved paddling technique and we powered back to the shore. We capsized in the shore break: I was expecting a torrent of abuse but all I heard was laughter as a wet but happy Mrs W stood up in the shallow water. Ronan and I set off again and found some sand sharks just 20m from the shore. Sounds scary but there is little chance of losing a limb to this species. Lindi joined us for lunch at Poseidon's on the beach at Del Mar. Went for a walk along the beach and Ronan pointed out William Shatner's house. PM:Girls went to get a mani and pedi. Boys put the roof down on the Mustang and went for a cruise around the hood. Finished off the day with a sunset jog along the beach and a beer in a pub watching the Superbowl.
