Uh oh!
Struck camp in Vegas and drove to the old end of the strip past the faded classics like the Sahara. Turned left on to Interstate 15 and headed south for LA. Passed desert landscape of Joshua trees, scrub, bill boards and the odd trailer house for a couple of hours before stopping in Barstow for a burger. The weather had broken and the odd spot of rain appeared on the windscreen.
By the time we got to the pass near Big Bear ski resort we were in clouds and cars were covered with snow. Traffic slowed to 30 and we realised that timing was not on our side. Turned onto the I-10 and sped into LA making full use of the empty car pool lane. The heavens opened and one of the rare rainfalls here brought the traffic to a standstill. We also had no map or idea where we were going apart from hoping for signs to LAX. We both agreed calmly that there was no point stressing and went with the flow…..Gave up on making the flight and, dropped off the car and arrived at check in. Hung around in the worst airport terminal I have ever experienced (only catering provided by Starbucks) with 4 other late arrivals (one of whom played a harp to relax herself). Were on standby for later flight but weren't called. Bummer! Off to the Sheraton airport hotel for an unscheduled break in the journey to New Zealand. We laughed at our view of the Budget car lot, having got quite used to birds eye view of Las Vegas!
So today we are off to the airport. Have been told to get there for 1pm and they will see what they can do for us as the flight at 7.30pm is full (yes, that's 7.30pm which means hanging around the worst airport for 6 hours). Apparently because we showed up and sat around for a couple of hours yesterday, we will be top of the list for the standbys today.
Not sure when we will be back on this - if we don't get a flight today, we'll sign in again from here, LA. If we do get a flight, will be back blogging when we next get wifi in NZ.
Wish us luck! Gulp!
