Can't believe we have to leave Croatia today! Where has the last 13 days gone?!? What an awesome experience this has been - feel we have covered an enormous amount, met some amazing people and have had an abundance of incredible experiences! This departure will be tinged with sadness though no doubt plenty of good times ahead in Greece. Sincerely hope we get back here some day!
Shared an omelette for breaky in the Placa (after witnessing the people next to us struggle with theirs) then our last wander through this beautiful old town - before the hordes of tourists arrived and heat intensified. Must admit this is the first day since we left home that we actually spotted clouds in the sky!! Not complaining of course!
Once back and packed up Darko was soon on hand to assist our climb down the stairs of Antuninska street with our luggage and out of the walls of the old town. I waited with our luggage while Raym and Darko walked up to the carpark then drove down to load up. There really is no adequate way to repay people for such helpfulness and hospitality! He won't be forgotten in a hurry!
We then drove the few kilometres to Cavtat. This was originally a Greek settlement called Epidaurus that became a Roman colony around 228BC but was destroyed during 7th century Slavic invasions. During the Middle Ages it was part of the Dubrovnik republic and is considered the origin of Dubrovnik.
We parked and wandered around this charming little town wrapped around a pretty harbour jam packed with amazing motor cruisers - never seen vessels so mammoth! Lovely walk around a promenade area skirting gorgeous pebble beaches with plenty of people enjoying the sun and crystal clear water. Found a couple of bars enroute yet again strategically placed - can only happen in Europe! All so picturesque! Once we had covered everything chose one of the many bars and restaurants to have a bite to eat - love their tuna paste and yet another lovely salad.
Felt it was time to head off after 3 hours in Cavtat - so drove the couple of kilometres to the airport, topped up the petrol then found our UniRent car rental office amongst all the others. Dubrovnik is a relatively small airport so all quite easy - walked across the road to check in. Bit early but all good. Through customs etc with over an hour to spare and just enough Kuna for a couple of farewell pivos each. Perfect!
Zbogom Croatia!
Bring on the next stage of our adventure!
With an hour time difference and an hour and a half flight, arrived in Athens at 7.15pm local time. Baggage collection and customs were quick so we decided to give metro a go into the city (EUR14 for both of us instead of 40-45 in taxi). Station is literally right at airport and after 15 minute wait we were on way for 40 minute trip to Monastiraki. Once up the escalators was 100metre walk to the Attalos Hotel.
Our third floor room was basic but very comfortable ...but we were blown away when opened the balcony door and could see the Acropolis! OMG! We were up to the 6th floor rooftop bar in record time - the view of the beautifully illuminated Acropolis is mind blowing! Thanks Con & Maria - so grateful for your recommendation! What better way to spend the last couple of hours of our first day in Greece!?!?
