Hello everyone!
Well... we've had an unbelievable week so far! Started in Bangkok- this mainly involved racing around the city in tuk tuks, trying not to get scammed, drinking on khao san road and having our eyes opened at a ping pong show (those girls have real talent).
We then made our way to the Cambodian border, where we did actually get scammed... after what amounts to kidnap by a tuk tuk driver- we were taken to a small wooden hut and told that this was where we needed to purchase our visa. Feeling slightly more at ease by the fact there were a lot of other travellers there who appeared perfectly fine with purchasing their visas from these clowns, we duly handed over our cash and received a visa. We were then taken to the border and realised we'd been charged way more than we should have been... however, didn't find a single other person who hadn't been scammed by either the 'hut men' or the consulate.
Once in the country we made our way to Siem Reap- home of Angkor Wat for some culture. Siem Reap was a really lovely little town- lots of pubs and bars on the imaginatively named Pub Street so met a few other backpackers over some beers. Next day involved a 4.30am get up to arrive at Angkor Wat for sunrise. Sunrise was pretty spectacular and by the end of the day we were templed out.
Next stop- Phnom Pehn, the capital. Might have been even crazier than Bangkok! We saw some of the temples, the Royal Palace etc... exchanged email addresses with a buddhist monk- who asked if he could add us on facebook?! The next day we learnt a bit more about Cambodia's recent history and the Pol Pot regime- visited the genocide museum and the killing fields, which were both pretty horrific. Horrendous to think that it only happened 30 odd yrs ago.
After that we made our way to the coast, a town called Sihanoukville, for some R&R on the beach. Met loads of other travellers around here, some v cheap bars and clubs! Staying in a hut at the moment- managed to fit 4 of us in a 3 bed hut with no hot water, no flushing toilet or air con... only $2.50 a night though. Me, Riggers and Whitford are sharing a double bed and they touch me in the night. Whitford's already had her bag nicked.. would have to be her (it was a pretty special fanny pack too, that she wore outside her clothing making her and anyone else who's with her look like proper goons. Me and riggers are secretly glad it got stolen). Ate in a restaurant last night that was infested with rats (rigger's being the biggest). Also, everyone else went on a boat trip, but as my solidity levels had fallen to zero, i had to stay near a toilet/hole in the ground.
Next stop- Ho Chi Minh (sp?) (Saigon)- 12 hr bus trip with George's poor chat! Hopefully will update again soon (apparently no fb in Vietnam) and we'll try and upload the photos (not working here). Lorra love xxxx
