Day 239 - Puno & Peru sum up -Monday 11th June 2012
We arrived into Puno bus station at 6am and were welcomed by the "Sophie Flint" name tag held by the man from our hotel. Thankfully the hotel let us check in early so we got straight into bed and went to sleep! Come 11.30am England were playing (the Euros) so we sat in bed and watched the game- well Ad watched the game, I just messed around on the internet. Once the football was finished we headed out for a walk around the town and then headed to a little café for a late breakfast. After eating we continued to walk around and spent some time wandering around the markets. It's funny as Puno is not as high as Salkantay but both of us were suffering with pounding hearts and shortness of breath - it felt like we were doing a constant workout!
In the evening we went a restaurant that had been recommended to us for the food and the show of traditional dances. The dancing was great to watch - all in their traditional dress singing and dancing. The food was great too with the exception of my main course - I decided to be brave and try the local delicacy, guinea pig. It was served with its head complete with eyes and teeth!! Now there isn't much that I don't eat or don't like but the eyes of the little guinea pig was a bit too much for me! Slightly grossed out, we headed back to our place!
Peru sum up
Peru was yet another country that surprised us and treated us to some really good times. From the glitz of Lima, the sand boarding and fun times of Huacachina, the festiveness and colours of Cusco, the remoteness of Salkantay and finally the mystic of Machu Picchu - all completely different experiences but amazing in their own right.
Stand out things for Peru;
- It has quite possibly the cutest, fluffiest and friendliest stray dogs! They look so well, well fed and will willingly follow you to the end of the earth. If allowed I would have brought every one of them back home with me!
- Literally everyone in Peru seems to have either a baby or small child; it's like a fashion accessory. Plus they are again, mega cute - with little red cheeks and being carried in very colourful blankets on the back of their mums backs. Adoption of a Peruvian child was a big consideration!
- The food amazing was amazing as you've probably worked out from our blogs - enough said….
- The markets housed quite possibly the scariest mannequins we have ever seen! Some had no eyes, some half of their face had been bitten off (Katie - I'll bite your face haha) but most just were far too human like. God knows what would happen to them after dark….
