The Flaherty Three's Adventures!
Custer, South Dakota
Sean and Cousin Regan's Trip to the Black Hills
July 6 thru July 11, 2006.
Thursday:
Regan, Sean, Grandpa Paul and Grandma Val left Lakeville at 1:00 pm. First stop was Medford, Minnesota for lunch at McDonalds. Everyone got their favorite items. We stopped at a rest stop to get out and stretch our legs and have a pop and some chips. There were swings and a slide at the rest area. Then on the road we all went, next stop Chamberlain, South Dakota. Here crossed the Missouri River. The area was very pretty with the alot of trees along the cliffs and the water was so blue. At Al's Oasis we went into the grocery store and got some items for supper. We had ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit and milk. Kinda windy but it worked out ok.
Back on the road again next stop: Wall, South Dakota. We arrived at our motel 9:30 pm. We were in a new time zone - mountain. It was really 10:30 pm back home.
After taking in our suit cases to our room Grandma Val, Sean and Regan went to the Dairy Queen for ice cream, that sure did hit the spot. It was kinda warm out and we had to eat fast as our ice cream was melting fast. We even picked up Grandpa Paul a dilly bar. On our walk to the DQ we saw a dinosaur and some wood animals in a man's yard, just of few of the animals were eagle, beaver, elk, deer, bear, ducks and mountain lions. He certainly did have alot of animals in his yard. Then it was bed time, but not until Sean and Regan gathered tourist information about sites to see in the Black Hills.
Friday:
We got up and went to the main entrance to the motel and there they were serving breakfast, we had rolls and juice. Then the car was loaded and we headed for Wall Drug. We saw a huge dinosaur, singing cowboys, giant rabbit, stagecoach and lots of old pictures of what the west was like years ago. Headed back to the car and drove onto the Black Hills. Once in Rapid City Grandma Val stopped to pick up information on homes and land for sale.
We stopped to look at some land on Limestone Creek Road. It rained and some people that Grandpa Paul was talking to, invited us in and gave us a treat. Once it stopped raining we were on our way to Custer and to check on getting a motel. We got a nice big room at the Bavarian Inn, it has two pools, one inside and one outside. It rained alot with lots of thunder and lightning. We saw alot of deer playing and eating in the forest.
Once we got checked into our room the lady at the desk said we could go swimming once it stopped raining.
Because it was raining we decided to go the Wrangler Cafe and have lunch. It was good and we sure did have alot of french fries to eat. Once back at the motel Sean and Regan went swimming in the indoor and out door pool. The sun came out and it got really nice. Regan and Sean took showers and we all went for a ride around the black Hills. Saw pigtail bridges, and tunnels. In two of the tunnels we could see Mt Rushmore in the distance. We stopped at a scenic view place and there Sean saw Ryan from school. We saw some donkeys and Grandpa Paul fed them cheese its. Next stop was Mt. Rushmore. There were some singers there from Alabama and they sang Sean's favorite song, while the singing was going on, 6 soldiers dressed in uniform came out and made the statue of the men on Iwo Jima. Then they asked the men and women who had or are serving in the different services of the government to please stand. Sean and Grandpa Paul stood up when the Air Force was mentioned. After the program they turned on several bright lights and the faces all lite up. We got home about 10:30 and went to bed. Everyone was pretty tired, big day we had.
Saturday:
After showers we were up and ready for breakfast. Juice, cereal, milk and rolls. Grandpa Paul called his friend, Dennis and they said to come out. We left and headed out to their cabin. On the way we saw deer and lamas.
When get go the Dennis and Karlene's Dennis told Grandpa Paul about some property for sale. They left to check it out. When they came back, Grandpa Paul, Karlene and Grandma Val left to go see it. While they were gone, Dennis took Regan and Sean on a jeep ride to the top of Cicero Peak. Dennis also let Regan and Sean drive a four wheeler and they got to drive the jeep. They also crushed cans for Dennis and played with Gracie and Kards their two dogs. Gracie was Regan's buddy and Kards was Sean's. Throwing the fresbee was the dogs favorite.
Later on Karlene and Grandma Val took Regan and Sean into Custer to go to the Flintstone Village. It was really cool, we got to ride a train and look into all the houses and homes for Fred and Barney. When we were on train we went thru a canyon and saw dinosaur bones and figures along the walls. Afterwards we stopped and got subway sandwiches for lunch. Then headed back to Karlene and Dennis' cabin and stayed till supper. Went back to go swimming. Had supper at Taco John's, then to bed.
Sunday:
Got up, excited to go back to Dennis' as we are going fishing in his pond. On our way to Dennis and Karlene's we stopped by the house and cabins that are for sale. We walked around and then up into the forest. Grandpa Paul and Sean went up a ways on Custer Mountain. Grandma Val and Regan were rock hunting. Regan got some neat rocks to take home. Back in the car and on our way to Cicero Peak Ranch. ( Dennis and Karlene's cabin/home). Once we were at the cabin Dennis let Sean shoot the pellet gun. Regan played with a little girl named Ashley who was there with Dennis' relatives.
Later on Sean and Regan went fishing, Sean got five fish and Regan one. Had a fun time.
Sean and Regan rode the 4 wheeler again, Sean got to go on a big ride with 9 other four wheelers with Grandpa Paul. Dennis tryed to get mud on them, but it didn't work out. Grandpa Paul got out of the way just in time. Had a big cookout, lots of roast, chicken, beans, salads and desserts. Yummy.........
Regan got to drive the jeep one more time with Grandma Val and Sean.
Later that afternoon we said good bye and went back to our motel to swim. Had some popcorn and pop and then to bed.
