So much for getting up early. The flight and time change finally caught up with us and we over-slept... BIG TIME! So we rush to get ready and get out the door. Within minutes it starts to rain...and rain... and rain. We picked up a few cheap "tourist" umbrellas and kept moving hoping that we would be able to get everything done we had on our agenda for the day.
After breakfast at the little cafe we found and liked (Piggy's just off Piccadilly next to the Le Parker Meridian) we made our way to the National Gallery at Trafalger Square. Much like most things we found in London, the gallery was well organized and the building was as impressive as the art housed in it! We made our way from room to room passing amazing paintings by such artists as Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Degas, Michelangelo and Turner. In particular we liked Monet's "The Thames below Westminster, about 1871" and Turner's "The Fighting Temeraire tugged ot her last berth to be broken up, 1838" which was voted the best British painting... ever. We're bringing a few small prints home.
Next was the adventure that Logan sent us on... the train to White Harte Lane to get Tottenham Hotspur kits. We made our way to the Charing Cross station and had to endure a 9 min delay in the tube due to "person under a train" which messes up the whole system, as you can imagine. Once on the tube we made it to Liverpool Street station and got on a 25 min train ride to the stadium. We visited the Spurs Superstore, made our purchase and hopped back on the train to London. Tottenham is really not the place you want to spend any vacation time!
By the time we returned to London the rain had let up and we headed to the Covent Garden area. We got off the tube at Covent Garden Station and Jayme did not want to wait with the masses for the lifts. So we took the stairs. OOPS! The stairs out are 193 steps which is equal to a 15 storey building! Needless to say, that was a killer.
Once we caught our breath we started to walk around the area and we found something fun, interesting or quaint around each corner. We really liked this area and plan to return to it during our trip. We settled down for dinner at the Covent Garden Market and Jamie Oliver's Union Jack restrauant. We very much enjoyed our meal but were left a bit surprised as the couple at the table next to us did a "dine and dash." As much fun as the restraunant is, the toilets are really something fun to see. They are throw-back catalog ads from the 60s. Really quite funny.
After our meals we went back to walking around the area. We found a row of classic London red telephone booths, passed the Royal Opera House, saw a rainbow and then, as we left the area we took a very long way home. Along the walk we saw The Sherlock Holmes, went out on the Golden Jubilee Bridge, walked back to Trafalger Square where we started our day and then walked along Pall Mall to St. James's Palace and then back to the hotel.
All in all a very busy and long day.
