What busy day in Turkey today. We started at the blue mosque. It was a 2 minute walk from our guest house. I thought it was amazing it was such a huge building and so old. It was amazingly well decrotated with geometric patterns, and caligraphy. Additionally, the fact that it is currently in use 5 times a day adds to it. I dont know how neither of us thought of it but we bothbwore shorts and were passed full length skirts to put on.., which was fine... im not sure how into it alex was though.
Then we went to the haia sogia. Thousand year old church turned mosque turnef museum. We gave that idea up upon seeing the line.
So we went yo the dolmache palace. Thr new palace. We checked thay out. The harem, certaimly had ottoman flavour but everything else was very westernized. Which was the sultans goal.
It was pretty impressive but given the number of European palace we have hsd over thelast several days, it could have hsd a bigger affect.
Then we walked up the hill to see the new city square. Where we got some baklava and some locum (turkish delight) and then we march back over the bridge to the old town. We took in the spice bazaar whifh was big and chaotic but a bit of a disappointment as every dtall was selling spice, locum, caviar, and tea. I had been told to avoid every stall that was not a specialist. We did more shopping in the streets surronding the bazaar. I got some kitchen stuff and alex got some clothes... if this is the smaller one the Grand Bazaar will be unmanageable but I sippose it will still be interesting.
After that we went to the haia sofia, where we were hapoy with the short line. Again it was an smazing building considering its roughly a thousand years old. And the jesus mosiac on the second floor was so realistic it was incredible, I have never seen a modiac of a persons face look real and have a true emotion. I think this old building met more with alex's approval.
After that we went and sat in the park between the blue mosque and aya sofia amd just watched... I suspect we will go for supper soon. I will say the food has been great. We had chicken donairs last night and then continued to sit on the patio for some time. They were good. At lunch we had donair it was amasing. First of all they are meat.,. Not ground meat, secondly the flavoring is a bit lighter, thirdly there is not bread involvef and finally, no donair sauce involved. They were still amazing, they judt were not what mariyimers call donairs.
I should also mention that although tye trip from the airport was long and we goy lost once it was alright.
