Hey everyone
Today we explored Wellington! Again.
We decided to get our walking shoes on again and walked up Mount Victoria, a huge mountain right in the centre of Wellington. We started out walking along the streets and somehow got a little lost - we didn't realise trying to find a mountain would be such a difficult task. Once we corrected our path, we found the walkway to the mountain and started to make our ascent. After 10 minutes walking we were rewarded with spectacular views of the city, the harbour and the mountain on the other side of the city - none other than Mount Albert.
Unfortunately, we realised we were nowhere near the top, so carried on our pathway to the summit. It was pretty steep in some places but after about 45 minutes we eventually made it. People we met at the top had simply got the bus to the summit, but we felt all the more rewarded for our effort (although knackered, too). The 360 degree view showed the odd shape of Wellington - the harbour to the front of us snaked around the city to the Cook Strait, behind us. A mountain range surrounded the city, which we learnt was once covered in native forest and is now a protected greenbelt. We also stood on the spot where if you flew straight ahead the next land mass you would encounter would be the Antartic - we definitely felt the chill in the wind.
After a few pictures we headed down the mountain. We decided to take a detour and walk along the mountainside, so we decended via Oriental Place. This is known as 'millionaires row' where huge houses on the steep mountainside overlook the harbour, complete with their own private cable cars. We walked alongside the harbour and sat and watched the boats for a little while, but as it started to get dark we headed to the supermarket to get tonights dinner. As we were really hungry from all the exercise, we decided to have a traditional british dish... the 'roast dinner'.
We went back and watched Casino Royale while we summoned some energy to make the feast that we had in store for ourselves. Once it ended we forced ourselves into the kitchen where we made our our roast potatoes and roasted vegetables, including carrot, parsnip, onion, garlic, and kumara. Christina cooked the New Zealand lamb steaks which were amazing. It was such a treat to have good british hearty meal, but it didn't end there - Alex stewed us some apples which we had with cream, it was all so nice. We washed it down with a bottle of Lindemans Early Harvest Semillon, which we tried at the Cellar Door in Australia and liked a lot. We were very proud of our roasting abilites as we settled down to drink the rest of the wine in the cinema room, watching Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Xxx
