Thea and Lizzie's travels
Ok so here we are in Australia. We Arrived in Perth and settled into the Aussie way of life which is pretty chilled out. We went down to Fremantle and stayed up there for a few days. We found 'Freo' about as laid back as a place can be. We stayed in a good hostel and met some interesting people and had some good nights out! We had been pretty tight with money so far so decided that we would push the boat out and go out for lunch on our last day in 'Freo'. Now I (Lizzie) decided that I couldn't be that close to the sea without having some form of fish, so I tucked into my prawns without a second thought! Ok, later that night..... Yes the prawns made a reappearance. Not only that but I some how manage to knock my self out on the loo as well- I don't like to do things by halves!! Though the real tragedy of the story is that earlier in the day I had indulged in a whopping chunk of choc cake and you guessed it, I can't now stomach chocolate! As you can imagine this did put a small dapper on new year's eve but we were not prepared to let a little thing like food poisoning stop us celebrating! We headed out and you definitely couldn't say the evening wasn't entertaining! It was hilarious walking the streets, you had it all, loads of random drunks, classic fashion disasters, street dancers, fire dancers (not a patch on the performances on Koh Tao!) and the classic was two massive slug things (not real of course) with some very strange people riding them- check out the photos as I cant explain it properly! We ended up in quite a nice bar and saw the New Year in the usual fashion, though it was just the two of us singing Old Lang Syne! New Years day however had the edge; we headed off to Perth race course, for the Perth Cup. We had a cracking day (I even managed to back the winner for the cup). We lived it up in the only fashion suited to such an occasion- including the champagne and we had the dresses!! Though I would have to add now that it didn't quite have the edge of racing at home!
We then flew on to Cairns, via Ayres Rock (of which we had a good view off out the plane window!). We didn't stay long in Cairns only long enough to purchase 'the van' ( we think she will be named 'Niss'!) She is a beauty, perfect shade of blue, fitted out with all the luxury amenities one could ask for... a sink that you can't get water out of, a leaking roof, lack of ventilation... but in her defence she has an aura of class about her and double bed is more than comfortable! So we made a shrewd deal for her (I use shrewd in a liberal manner!) and headed on out to start our journey. Now that we are becoming quite taken to the diving we could not resist heading up north to Cape Tribulation to dive the Great Barrier Reef. The drive up was beautiful and it was great to have the freedom of the van. We pulled up at camp site and booked in to dive. The place itself only has 60 people living there and is pretty remote, with scattered places poking out of the jungle now and again. The dive was amazing we saw so many fish and the diversity of the colours was amazing. The coral was beautiful and in much better condition to that off Thailand. The whole day was special, the crew was a great bunch, the lunch and wine provided hit the spot and as for the weather we could not have asked for better conditions! We also managed to get directions for an idyllic spot near by where we could pull up and no one would catch us! Though we did feel a little concerned as we drove by the private property signs on the way in convinced that we were going to get caught, so when David (a guy off the boat) rocked up when it got dark with his mate and decided pretend to be the owner we were well and truly taken in!! Though we soon got over that as they invited us back to their house where we got fed and I got to sleep in a bed!!! Their place was amazing, no doors just open all the way through, views of cape tribulation out one side and Mount sorrow out the other. It was amazing to lie in bed looking out a sky full of stars and wake up to the sunrise over the sea in the morning. Plus there was no shortage of company through the night with the countless bats, bugs, mosquitoes flying around. We had fresh mangos and star fruit for breakfast from the back garden; it was a perfect setting in the middle of nowhere. From there we headed back to the spot from last night as we were told there was a beautiful water hole just through the clearing near where we had parked up- it was truly beautiful. We then drove back later on when it got cooler and camp by Palm Cove beach. We now find ourselves back in Cairns re- supplying and soon to be heading on south to get some work to fund our next dive- we are getting hooked!!
lots of love lizzie and thea
