Thea and Lizzie's travels
Ok quite excited about writing this as we have absolutely loved Bolivia!! Where to start, well we eventually left San Pedro in Chilie and went on a three day two night tour across the desert and salt plains to Uyuni, Bolivia. It turned out that it was just the two of us on the tour which was probably a good thing as neither of us were a hundred percent! So we crossed the boarder and headed into the wilderness. Our guide was a bit of a dude and loved his jeep! It was not the smoothest ride ever and im still not too sure how the jeeps survive! On the first day we drove through some amazing scenery, Thea got all excited because of all the volcanoes and was educating me throughout! The lagoons we saw were so cool and the reflections were pretty impressive, but as we have successfully managed to break the camera im not too sure if the disposable camera will be any good! The day was spent in the national park and as there were just the two of us it was peaceful and chilled. The colours and landscapes the volcanoes produced were amazing I only wish we could have captured them better for you all to have a look at because it was fantastic! We stayed on the edge of the 'red lagoon' for that night which was amazing the colours once again were something special. Also the lagoon was full of flamingos, which is some sight; they come to the area for the minerals in the water. That afternoon we went for a stroll to a good look out to see the lagoon in all its glory, it was a nice walk and too be honest any excuse to keep moving is good as it was so bloody cold!! Now we did have a small incident when Thea managed to sit on a thorn pile. Now I would just like to point out that on a number of occasions Thea has mocked me over how pedantic I am about where I place my rear end and ive always said that you should always look before sitting (Roald Dahl's dirty beasts educated me well as a child!)But it seems this has not made an impression!! It was very funny though Thea didn't think it at the time, or when I was taking great delight in pulling them out one by one that night, oh the fuss!! (It looked like grass is all I'm going to say on the matter!) Moving on that night we got fed well and had an early night, though once again would just like to comment that it was so cold!! We got up early to see the sun rise which was cool. That day we went to see the geysers, and some amazing volcanic land forms - not too sure of the technical terms sorry, ask Thea! But they were amazing these massive 'rocks' in the middle of nowhere, it was at times like that when it was cool that it was just the two of us, as it was just the two of us in the middle of nowhere, the silence was a sound in itself. We got into Uyuni mid afternoon and bump into Sophie from San Pedro which was cool. We wandered around and tried to sort out the camera problem, looks like we may have to buy a new one which is a pain. The following day we went out on to the salt plains, which were something else, miles and miles of pure white so cool! We had lunch on 'fish island' - very strange this island of cacti in the middle of the salt desert, but were pretty cool. I hope we got some good photos but as on disposable camera you will have to wait to see them! It was a wicked day, and we finished of looking around a hostel made of salt and some abandoned steam trains- sounds random and it was but was cool at the same time! I purchased a camera that night, not too sure but it seems ok and the family we bought it from was so nice, you'll see the photo on the website!
The following day we took a bus and then a very interesting jeep ride to Tupiza- Butch Cassidy country, so cool! The jeep ride would have been cool as the countryside we crossed was really nice but there were 16 of us rammed in and three of which kept chucking up! We got to Tupiza and struggled for a very long time to find our hotel- there were like three streets and it took like three hours! Tupiza is nice, small and everyone knew everyone else! We stayed at such a nice hotel, but only had a night there before we were off on our three day horse trek! Ok ill try and not harp on too much but it was so good!! Our guide was such a dude he was 18yr called Louis. The horses were pretty good actually. The first day was so cool we had lunch at a really nice place and then got into the village we slept at mid afternoon. The scenery we rode through was so cool, just like 'Butch Cassidy and the Sun dance kid'. We rode for about seven hours that day and so on the first night crashed pretty early. Surprisingly we could walk the following day and headed on quite early. Spent most of the day riding up through a river through the mountains which was so cool! My horse had a habit of splashing Thea quite a lot, though it was hot so I would have thought she would have appreciated it! Come the afternoon we did have a small incident, we had taken it pretty steady - as well why rush!! Well we went for a stretch and Thea got a little hasty, she was at the front so she could pick the pace. Well Louis and I were going on along when Thea took a little detour, we were not too sure what she was doing to start with as there wasn't much speed. Well we kept going then off Thea goes into the distance but still at a steady pace- I thought it was just a steering problem (we have all been in a car with Thea!). The slight problem was that it took Louis and I a while before we realized there was a problem- the screams soon gave it away! Though we both did then go in pursuit with haste!! Though I had a few problems of my own, Aloon my horse was such a dude, but a little fresh and liked to go up rather than forward and when we did go forward we were not too good at going straight, so it took us a little while to get to Thea but rest assured that the thought was there! Well we tracked her down, 500m off the track down the way, no harm done, but she did change horses after that! (Thea: it may not have looked like I was going very fast but in actual fact the Speedo was reading 100 mph! My horse was crazy it just took off and all Liz did was laugh! And I'd also like to add that although I may not be great at steering horses I can steer vehicles much better than Liz as our lack of hubcaps in NZ shows!) Yeah sorry she was going like s*** of a shovel really, and the horse was REALLY crazy, in a way!!!! That night we had company, two guys from Israel, very strange!! But it was cool we played cards and stuff and their guide Ruben and Louis were so funny together!! Spent the whole night chasing each other and fighting, but the best had to be when I gave Louis my I-Pod and Ruben had one of the guy's MP3 player. They lost all inhabitations and were singing along at the tops of their voices! The night progressed and the red wine soon came out - Thea deserted me at this point! I can't blame her as they mixed this very rough red wine with Fanta not good! Well three bottles down and we are still going, though the singing has got worse and the card game had all but deteriorated, though I did kick their arses!! Also it's amazing how good their English gets when drunk! It was a very funny night though the morning was not so good!! Our last day we rode with the guys which was cool, Louis and Ruben hung over or not seemed to have plenty of energy to continue fighting!! It was a wicked day once again, though Aloon was a little crazy and I hurt my leg when we hit a tree but no harm done can still just about walk!! We got back to Tupiza mid afternoon and it was sad to say goodbye to Louis and Ruben- happy days!! We left that evening to La Paz and can't explain how tried we were, not much was said on the bus before we crashed!
La Paz was a welcome sight after a 17 hour bus ride, with NO loo!! The drive down into La Paz was cool and it was an impressive sight! We met two girls from Austria whilst trying to find somewhere to stay who were really nice! Consequently we decided to take Spanish lessons with them for a couple of days which was cool! La Paz was really nice actually and had a lot of character! We also biked down the world's most dangerous road whilst in La Paz! It was actually so much fun if a little nerve racking!! The views were well worth any fear factor as hopefully the photos will show! Though I did irritate my knees pretty badly which, was a shame. We met four English girls on the trip who were really cool and we went out with them on our last night. We spent our last day shopping- oh my, did we do well Thea bought a guitar- we didn't really think of the carrying aspect till after!! I bought the traditional skirt from such a nice lady - photos and all!! That night we went for a meal with the girls which was really nice, the place was cool but full of yuppies- great people watching! The night turned into a long one, we got back at gone five and we were up for a bus an hour later, we were fresh!! So we got to Copacabana a little frail, which could explain how Thea successfully slept from five in the afternoon till ten the following day, I wasn't far behind! Copacabana was a quaint little pace in a beautiful setting! It has to be said that to start with we thought there was a strange vibe but we soon found out that someone had been murdered on the weekend, a local in a drunken fight and so all was a little strange and all the bars were shut as a consequence. We had to chill there for a day or two as my knees were not up to the exploring of the islands and neither of our bellies were great! However a day turned into three as the bank failed to open and we didn't have any money!! Though there are worse places I can think of to be stuck! We met up with the English girls from the bike ride for a belated birthday celebration for Charlie and for St George's day celebrations, we had flags and all!! At last we got some money and so celebrated and did a little shopping, the main street was littered with jewelry makers all really nice people!! Oh and how could I forget we also had an English breakfast, beans and all!! I've been having a little bit if a nightmare with my hair, Thea says it the worse hair she has ever seen - I think that's a little OTT!! But im so fed up with trying to get a brush through it that I got some braids put in (mum, promise I wont get dreads don't worry!) We got chatting to the guy that did it and arranged to meet a load of them later down by the lake for music etc. It was a cool evening actually, all the locals and native travelers met down there and played music and we got on the neat vodka!! The music was so cool and pretty impressive, it was a chilled night and once again it wasn't long before the dancing started!!! I think we are getting better, we are been educated by the experts so we shouldn't be that bad!! We soon however got moved on by the police and they all went on to a hotel but we called it night as we had to catch a boat over to the Island early! It was a cool night and we met some wicked people, who didn't disown us after seeing us dance!! So the following day we headed to the island of the sun. It was pretty impressive, the three hour walk from north to south was so cool and we met some people on the way and all stayed at the same place that night! The place we stayed looked over the lake and the views were priceless. The Inca ruins were cool and it was a nice two day trip, well worth the wait! That day we left Bolivia and headed to Arequipa in Peru. We were really said to leave Bolivia as it has been so good, lets hope Peru lives up to it!! Hope all is great lots of love us xxxxx
