One of the unique and mysterious aspects of Milan is the hidden shrubbery and gardens scattered throughout the city. As with any large, bustling, commercial city, Milan's roads are dotted with tall buildings, reminding me of an ancient NYC or the brick areas of Boston. The architecture is breathtaking, but where is all the green that you see from Google Maps? Although a select few streets line with towering trees completely shading the sidewalks and giving the area a rustic feel, it is hard to find many other plants besides the colorful flowers adorning balconies. Luca pointed out, correctly, that you must look deeper than the surface to find this hidden beauty. Most buildings contain large entryways with shut doors, yielding access only to inhabitants or workers of the premises. However, wandering the streets, sometimes you are lucky enough to sneak a peek through these doors as they open. What's on the other side? Beautiful gardens and courtyards! It is almost similar to the famous Secret Garden. Although at times unattainable, an open door reveals flowers and fountains and trees and bushes that compose some of the greatest sites of nature found in Milan. All you have to do us look!
