The travels of Karyn and Robert
We arrived in Venice just before lunch, after a day at sea. The sun was shining and the view from our stateroom window revealed a Venice in all its summer glory. The tiles on the Doge's Palace were glistening and the trees were in full bloom. The hardest thing was to chose what to do or where to go. We have visited Venice in Winter and the difference is amazing, the number of tourists triples, as do the street vendors and gondola's. Today we had our walking shoes on and made our way, after an express Waterbus ride from the cruise terminal to Piazza San Marco, to the old part of Venice - as far away from the tourists that we could discover. Fr. Jimmy had two maps and we followed the signs the alley ways and bridges for six hours. There were a few alley ways that did not have shops, but in the old quarter the shops were selling handmade goods - we could have spent all our Euro's, but we knew our baggage limit. We walked into churches that looked interesting, found a cafe that had 1 euro coffee, which also had free wifi for 20 minutes (so with the flight numbers and passport numbers and quick fingers tying I was able to checkin online and reserve our seats from Venice to Paris, Paris to Guangzhou, GuangZhou to Sydney. For dinner we found an Osteria that had handmade pasta con alle vongole or alle marinara, this was washed down with a bottle of Friulano Pinot Grigio. We returned to the boat tired, Venice at this time of year is photo worthy at every glance. We had to return to the reality of our last night on board and the mundane chores of packing and organising our visit to Robert's cousins who live near Venice, in a small town called Paese which is just outside the walled city of Treviso. This meant a quick race down to the free wifi at the entrance of the terminal with our computer and iPad at 10:30 pm. Luckily Robert can speak Italian, so the username and password did not remain a mystery. Tomorrow organised off to bed.
