Lucille (see picture) had a famous rest stop on Route 66 in OK. She died in 2000, and a new roadhouse opened in her honor. It is made out like a 50s diner, and the people are friendly and the food good. Last night we stayed in Elk City after another enjoyable day. It was cold and rainy in the morning then cleared up nicely. Although the temperature dropped into the 30s! Today warmed up nicely. We visited a good Route 66 Museum. BASEBALL IT IS! Oklahoma City has a AAA team. But before the game started the cold front arrived and the temp dropped from 80* to 60* with a strong wind from the cold north. Hank was shivering. A brief report tonight. We covered more miles today, some very old, some 4-lane modern. We left Grove and joined 66 in Afton. Much of Historic US 66 is followd by OK 66, hence the picture. The highlight today was Woodward Park in Tulsa, a beautiful public space. We walked and talked, met garden volunteers, and smelled the roses (literally). Our fifth day has brought us to Oklahoma. We worshiped at a UMC in Joplin MO. Nice folk. We passed through the corner of Kansas. Three miles of 66 is one lane (from the early 1930s). Entering Oklahoma we stopped in Commerce, the home of Mickey Mantle. Leaving 66, we diverted to Grove OK to visit a public gardens recommened by AAA.
