Was awoken by a high pitched mosquito in the night and had to get up to kill it. Long live Jungle Formula, 50% deet!!! That's enough to put me down never mind a little mozzie.
Later on got up at 5:45 for my train to Kandy. The train was mega!!!! A ticket for around £1 got me an absolutely stella seat, the train had glass windows, shiny fittings and nice toilets. Wow. Then there was the view…. Apparently Ella to Kandy is one of the most beautfil railway tracks in the world. Let me tell you, they weren't wrong. The train was slow, and took 6 hours to reach Kandy, slowly moseying in and out of all the mountains. Never realised Sri Lanka was so mountainous. They also said Sri Lanka is the biggest tea exporter in the world. Again they were not wrong…. You honestly have to see it believe it. Travelled for 5 hours and the whole duration of this was landscape after landscape of tea plantations, rows and rows and rows of the stuff.
Got off and as per there were lots of hotel owners waiting to see if they could pick up some custom. Went to 'The Hotel' (wonder how long it took them to think of that), 1400 a night. Went to a traditional show on the night; drums, dancing, comedic parts, acrobatics, people spinning endless plates at once, and the finale, fire walkers! Yeahhh! Not bad for less than £2. The show was in a big theatre full of all tourists. Half European and half Chinese. Went back to the hotel and got chatting to Yassu, Japanese guy, and Philip and Lucy, two Austrians. Philip spoke perfectly English, and had a biology background. He told us some mind blowing stories of him when he worked in the DRC for 6, doing medical research on behalf of the uni. The most absurd tails of corruption and violence which were somewhat scary.
