While tutoring in Holland the businessschool arranged a day tour to visit The Hague on Sunday, 24 June. Unfortunately the weather did not play along and we arrived in Den Haag with grey rain clouds rolling in over the city from the North Sea. We were all cold and disapppointed when we arrived at the Lola Bike and Coffee shop where we were to collect the bikes for a guided tour of the city. Due to the increment weather it was decided to rather walk the city.
After an excellent coffee at the bike shop we visited interesting places in mostly the historic part of The Hague. The Hague is first mentioned as Die Hage in a document dating from 1242. It is a city characterised by the symmetry and influence of French architecture of the 18th century. Due to modern influences this old world charm is countered by the new and at times ugly buildings of the 1980s and later.
At the time of our visit there was also an entire open air exhibition of South African artists on display - called "The Rainbow Nation." On a Sunday the city only comes to life after midday when shops open. After our guided tour we had some free time and then left late afternoon by tram for Schevenengin, the most popular board walk and beach in the area. By this time a strong wind has blown the rain clouds away and we arrived in sunny but very windy conditions. We explored the area and had supper in one of the many beach bars which appear during summer. It was a long and tiring day but it was an interesting experience to visit the Justice Capital of the world.
