Yesterday we had a long drive from Del Rio to Carlsbad, with scenery that barely changed. We passed lots of oil pumps - welcome to Texas! Also passed through a town called Loving, and Alex and I had a giggle reading messages about Loving on the noticeboard in the petrol station. We have yet to see a real-live-cowboy, but I'm pretty sure we saw a real-live-texan while we were reading those messages. He lumbered out of the bathroom and I caught Alex's eye and had to smile at the how fully this guy fit the stereotype! His belly protruded way over his jeans, threatening to burst their buttons, he had stretched a tight sleeveless tshirt over his body, and somewhere beneath the belly I caught a glimpse of a large shiny belt buckle, probably decorated with an eagle or a longhorn, and his boots were caked in dirt that comes hand in hand, I suppose, with working in the oil pumps that were located just outside the station.
Eventually we arrived at Carlsbad Caverns. Even the views BEFORE entering the caverns were outstanding; evidently we were within one of those ditant, horizon-hugging mountains that I had been seeing all day. The caverns themselves were, quite simply, breathtaking. No photo will ever do them justice, it is just too impossible to capture the enormity of the many, many rooms. It was so belittling to stare around - I felt so small and insignificant wandering around the caves, being smacked in the face by their sheer magnitude and reading about how long they had been growing - 250 million years!
