The rest of the group went out to try some Peking Duck for dinner, so John and I decided to hit the night market again! I tried some friend noodles and veges from a stall that cleverely marketed the fact that they sold vegetarian food, and revelled in this street exploding with noise and potential photos! I got some more caramalised fruit (it was very good) from a man who shouted "I love you! I love you!" and some coconut milk (not so good) which I suspect was just coloured water.
The poverty here really slaps you in the face. Despite Beijings shiny new makeover (and, boy, you can tell they really tried! They even apparently released a textbook for taxi drivers exacting the standards for their appearence - no sleeveless shirts, excessive tattoos, shaved heads etc...) it is still painfully obvious that there is such a huge unbalance between the wealth and the poverty.
We had truly intended to wake up early this morning to visit the Temple of Heaven like good little travellers, but the alarm beeped, we peered through sleep-crusted eyes to read 6:30am, and promptly went back to sleep. At a more reasonable hour we ventured outside for a stroll in the sun. We ate fried noodles and drank HUGE cold beers amoungst the screeching warcries of the market. After a month or so of sobriety, the beer went straight to our heads, so we soaked it up with some fried bananas lol.
