Kanchanaburi
May 8th - 10th (Day 65 - 68)
Hi everyone,
From Ayutthaya we picked up a minivan to Kanchanaburi. We headed to a guesthouse right on the river Kwai and managed to get a raft room. This is basically a normal hotel room but it is floating on a raft on the river, which is really cool....unless you are Tina and get sea sick looking at water, let alone living on it. To be fair she did quite well, the only times she felt sea sick was when a speed boat went past and rocked the room. The room also had a little balcony are where you could sit out and chillax right by the river.
The first thing we did in Kanchanaburi was to head upto the death railway museum, which is right next to one of the major prisoner of war cemeteries. The museum is fantastic and was worth the visited to Kanchanaburi alone, insightful and extremely moving.
The following day we took a ride on the death railway itself. The railway was mostly destroyed after WWII but part of it has been rebuilt by the Thai's and you are able to travel 120KMs of the original route towards Burma. The journey takes you over the famous 'bridge over the river Kwai' and then through some fantastic scenery as you travel across the Thai central plains and then into the mountains on the border with Burma. The journey ends at a town called Namtok, as there is very little to do here we immediately bought tickets to return to kanchanaburi. The return journey was even better as on the way there our carriage was overrun with tour groups, on the way back we had a carriage to ourselves which was great.
We spent the following day relaxing whilst trying to work out where to go next, whether to go to Bangkok for a few days of fly to Phuket or Ko Sumai.....in the end due to us not really wanting to go to a big city and the because flights to Phuket were much cheaper than Ko Sumai, we booked some plane tickets to Phuket for the following day. We booked ourselves a nice boutique hotel in Surin beach for Tina's birthday and to treat ourselves a little.....the only issue might be there weather as it is the beginning of the wet season in Phuket but hopefully it will be all good!
Take Care
