Quito
October 11th - 13th 2011 (Day 221 - Day 223)
After another gruelling 24 hours of travel we finally arrived in Quito, Ecuador. It took us three flights to get here, Las Vegas to Los Angeles, Los Angeles to Miami and from Miami to Quito. Even though we were well aware of how cold an airport can get at night and when tired. Miami airport is FREEZING!! we ended up huddling together on the floor in the airport desperately trying to keep warm and get a couple of hours of sleep.
We arrived in Quito late afternoon and was met by our arranged taxi driver. We discovered later that Ecuadorians found it strange that we couldn´t speak any spanish. We had the best intentions to learn beforehand downloading 100 spanish podcasts, however we had only managed to get to lesson 3. We could say hello and goodbye, this didn´t quite cut it.
Over the next couple of days we took it quite easy, to ease ourselves into the altitude, we wandered around the historical old town, taking in the plazas, churches, old spanish colonial buildings. Sooo Beautiful. One thing we did notice though was the large amount of police walking around, the shutters on all the doors, and the fact that our hostal keep the door locked at all times. Safety here is an issue and we made sure that we only took out what was neccessary.
It is cold here, not quite the Las Vegas heat we experienced before, I am now decked in my hiking shoes, fleece and waterproof coat. I don´t think I can really recognise myself anymore.
The people here are very little and cute, a mix of people wearing traditional clothes and modern clothing. Women wear blouses with shirts and shawls and little felt hats, men also wear little felt hats, hair tied in a plait, and white cropped trousers. The kids are also very cute, though a little grumpy looking which I guess makes them cuter.
We had decided to stay here for a while to mooch around and get our blog updated, however I had already become restless and began annoying Chris to move northwards so that I could attend the biggest Saturday market here in Ecuador. I was itching to go shopping...
