After showering the jungle off, we visited Newlands, the (re-built) house of Agnes Keith, an american author of 'Land beneath the wind', about life in Sandakan during the Japanese occupation. Motivated me to read her books.
We took a quick peek at the English tea house, with it's croquet lawn but unfortunately didn't have time to take afternoon tea.
The War Memorial, on the site of the WW2 POW camp, was our next visit and, as you can imagine, was a reflective one.
Next stop- the Buddhist temple, which was perched on the hill overlooking the bay. Our very informative driver showed us how (lion) statues, if accompanying a Buddha, are always positioned with the female to the right and the male to the left, as the Buddha looks out. Not sure if I wasn't told this in China or if I hadn't been paying attention! I lit an incense stick and made a wish (of course I can't divulge or it won't come true :)
Nice dinner on the waterfront though my peppermint and Oreos ice cream wasn't the perfect end :(
