I did it :) I made it to the summit of Mt Kinabalu - the highest peak in SE Asia, at 4095m. It wasn't as 'cuddly Disney character' as it sounds, it was tough going. The first day consisted of a 6km hike (mostly steps) upto 3200m over 5hrs followed by an overnight in the mountain guesthouse. The real fun began at 3am when we set off for the summit. We donned our head torches and hauled ourselves up the 2.7km route via ropes. I reached the summit at 6:30am, shortly after sunrise. The view (and relief!) was pretty awesome though once got the 'proof snap' headed back down pretty pronto as was a little nippy up there! The journey back down to the guesthouse was enlightening - revealing what we had climbed up in the dark a few hours previous! It was fun abseiling down, and we were rewarded with a nice hot breakfast on arrival.
The rest of the journey back down to HQ was somewhat trying on the knees and thighs. But Roisin and I chatted our way through, so much so that at one point we wondered if we had taken a wrong turn and would have to climb back up a bit - thankfully not!
Our mountain guides were fantastic especially S, as was our smiley porter Benjamin.
The day ended at Poring Hot Springs, which was thankfully not too sulphurously stinky and did help marginally with the aches and pains.
A celebratory meal and bed by 9pm!
