We made it home! It feels so good to be home with our new son. The trip home went quite smoothly, actually. He is such a trooper. He wore me out on the 12 hour flight from Hong Kong to SFO, because he was awake and crawling all over me for a majority of the trip. However, it was very helpful having Grandpa and Grandma on the flight. We passed him back and fourth over the aisle many times. His stays on Grandpa and Grandma's side of the aisle were usually brief, but just having a few minutes at a time without him on my lap helped provide much needed breaks. Also, with the help of some of Grandma's sugary rice cakes, they effectively talked him down from his only meltdown of the 22 hour oddessey. Huge!
Suprisingly, after a short night of sleep, the dude only slept for about 6 hours on the entire 22 hour trip and he remained in great spirits throughout. He even enjoyed hanging with his Uncle Micah, Denise, Great Aunt Jackie and Great Uncle Tony in the San Francisco airport. I think Ahn knew they were waiting for us, because he fell asleep in the backpack on the way through the security check right after we left them. Thanks for coming guys! It was so cool having some familiar faces meet us as we got off the plane. Also, thanks for the food and the wonderful gifts you guys brought. Very thoughtful! The Giants and Niners gear is awesome (he is wearing one of the Niners Onsies right now. Very sharp!) and the beautiful framed bible verse is perfect. There is a great spot in his room for it.
Last night, we all enjoyed tons of sleep in our own bed! Ahn went down about 8:30, and we followed shortly thereafter. He slept in his pack and play until about 2 and then was up crying until about 4. He was very traumatized. Mom grabbed him right away and hung with him on the couch for bit. Then we brought him into our bed until he fell asleep on Mom about an hour later. Then it was lights out for all four of us (Miles too) until noon the next day. I think Ahn was definitely trippin' out yesterday afternoon (we were!) as he had his first ride in a car seat, was introduced to his new home and met Miles the big hairy dog (not many dogs in China!). Anyway, despite the trauma of our arrival, he remained a trooper. Although, he did cry himslef to sleep in the car seat on the way home (he didn't appreciate the concept of being strapped in). It took about 5 minutes and he was out. My guess is that his next trip in the car seat will come with even more disapproval after he is fully rested. I am certain that he will protest big time.
Today has been great. He was been happy and smiling most of the day and we are really enjoyng our first day as parents in our home. Aunt Kat and Uncle Josh stopped by for a couple of hours this afternoon and he was all smiles with them as they played together and Mom and Dad were able to get a few things done.
That's all I got. Teri may have something to say later, but I do not anticipate blogging anymore. Once again, it has been so great having you all along for our adoption story. It is funny, Teri and I were in love the moment we met and we remain that way to this day. We love being together and we always have so much fun together. In reality, I believe that we would have continued to enjoy a happy existence together, even if we were never able to be parents. However, there would have always been that void that can only be filled by the unbridled joy of a child. And boy did we hit the jackpot! This kid was made to be in our family. He is such a perfect fit. I am still in total awe. Words just cannot describe our feelings about Ahn, this whole experience and our newly expanded family. Maybe God did have a plan all along? Teri and I used to say that to each other all the time, but I don't think I really beleived it until now. What a plan it was!
PS - I lied, one last thing. Dad/Candy, thank you so much for coming with us. I am not gonna say we could not have done it without you, but I can say that, without you guys, the trip would not have been as special as it turned out to be. What an experience for anyone, and to be able to share it with your parents? We were/are so fortunate. BTW, it was fun watching you guys dust off your baby handling skills. Mad, mad skills! Dad, you have the baby talk gig down. I guess it is like riding a bike.
