Students were excited to start their first official day at TSS. Last night, they participated in orientation, equipment checkout, and team building activities.
This morning, students woke up around 6:45 to a cloudy sky and a slightly cooler temperature of 37 degrees.
At 7:30, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast of oatmeal, fresh fruit, granola, yogurt, and cereal. Immediately following breakfast, students packed their lunches in their hoorahs (plastic containers) to take with them into the field. Shortly after, students headed back to the main lodge for a brief introduction of the day. While in the lodge, students completed e-stations,and broke into their field groups.
Each group hiked around the TSS campus and learned about the different communities: conifer, aspen, riparian, and sage brush. Students learned how to identify different vegetation as they hiked to various locations. Groups discussed the biosphere and how all living things are connected as well as always changing and moving. We had a great day in the field, and were able to cover a lot of ground. Every field group hiked to Coyote Rock, and were rewarded with great views and a wonderful spot to each lunch. In total, most groups hiked about 4.5 miles today. One group even spotted a mule deer. Yesteday all students were able to see a mother moose and her calf on the way to campus.
Rain was in the forecast for most of the afternoon, but we were lucky enough to only experience partly cloudy skies with a high in the sixties.
Late this afternoon, students enjoyed a bit of free time. Activities included a variety of sports in the playing field, board games in the main lodge, and just hanging out with friends!
Dinner will be at 5:30 this evening followed by our evening activity, astronomy. The astronomy lesson with be led by "Wyoming Stargazing," which was started by Dr. Sam Singer. Sam is known for his passion for the night sky. In college, he built telescopes and observatories. He even built an observatory at TSS. Sam has also been recognized by NASA for a lesson that he wrote on astronomy. If the skies are clear, we will have the opportunity to view the night sky, as well as several planets through telescopes this evening.
