Sunday morning - we all woke up and went to breakfast (obviously in silence) and were served the most disgusting looking chickpea mush!! For breakfast!? We were not impressed especially as we knew we had a trek ahead of us....luckily we had been to the shop down the road on Saturday so we had Oreos, Pringles and cereal bars for breakfast - we needed some sort of energy!
9.30am - and off we set - Tess was feeling very positive and said she was going to try and complete the whole trek without complaining so Emma said that she would give her 1000 rupees if she did it - it didn't last for long (half an hour)! The heat soon got to her and the hills were just ...well we can't begin to describe how painful and tiring they were. Poor Steph decided to stay behind as she was suffering from Delhi belly so got a jeep up a few hours later... she thought the trek might aggravate the situation!
10.15am - we were all struggling and the hard bit hadn't even started! It was sooo hot and everyone was dripping with sweat - we may have said this a few times but this time we mean it....we have NEVER sweated so much in all our life! A girl in our group called Josie had a really bad asthma attack & sadly had to go back to the 'hotel'.
It got to about 11am when we finally stopped and had a break - everyone fell to the ground with tiredness. We asked the guy in charge of our trek how far we had to go and his reply was 'the trek hasn't started yet and we have a long way to go' - great this gave us all a lot of enthusiasm!!
Off we set again after our 15 minute stop...it was flat for a little bit and we were all so glad...but suddenly...we soon found ourselves on a VERY narrow path which was VERY steep with endless branches and bushes scratching us, felt like we were in the middle of the bloody jungle. We have all got a lot of grazes.
The hills just kept getting steeper and steeper and everyone's legs were soon turning into jelly, especially Tess' when she fell off the path into the bushes and we nearly lost her! To make matters worse, Ione was feeling very weak so couldn't help her out too much! Tess was soon up and off we all set AGAIN! The views were incredible so Ione and Tess decided to get their camera's out to take a photo - Georgie was standing in the way (taking a rest) so Ione kindly asked her to move so she could take the photo, to which Georgie replied 'no just take the photo' - the heat had definitely got to her. We all laughed about it later!
We made it to the top of the mountain - YAY!! We had another 20 minutes to go but it was all flat so we were all happy! It was quite scary getting to the top though - we had to climb a very steep little hill which was lethal. Ione cut the side of her hand which wasn't good but a guy in our group, Karim (we call him creme fraiche) came to the rescue with anticeptic wipes, and Georgie with her plasters. Steph was waiting for us at the camp.
Finally we arrived! The tents were all set up for us which was a bonus and it was soon time for lunch. The food was amazing - we had vegetable noddles, chilli roast potatoes, veg fried rice & some sort of veg dumplings - we were all so hungry so we shoved it down in no time at all!
We then settled into our tents and dragged our sleeping mats outside to have a sunbathe - we need a tan before we see you all! (but in our desperation to tan we all look like lobsters!)
After sunbathing and chilling, we all went to watch the sunset over the mountains which was amazing. We then came back down to the camp for yet another delicious meal. We had tomato soup and popcorn to start with and then a selection of curries for the main course - lentils and chickpeas. For pudding we had banana fritters which were amazing!! The food at the camp was the best we've actually had all 3 weeks & we were treated so well. After supper we went and sat by a campfire that the guides had made for us - there were so many stars last night too. Incredible. We also all had a sing-a-long by the fire. There was a very sweet dog at the camp but we were all terrified of getting rabies, due to you all giving us lectures not to touch animals, so we were all running round each others chairs trying to avoid it.
10pm- We were all knackered so decided to hit the hay. We all settled into our sleeping bags and got comfortable (after a few screams due to bugs entering our tents!) by 11pm everyone was asleep. This was short lived as at 3am the most horrendous storm arrived - torrential rain and the worst lightening and thunder we have ever experienced (we were all s***ting ourselves, especially after all the flash floods that hit the Himalayas recently!) Ione and Fee's tent got flooded and Tess and Georgie heard Ione shouting for help!! They ended up sharing a mattress between them as Fee's was drenched. From 3am-6am the whole camp was awake! We were all chatting to each other from our tents and Tess' classic comment of the night was 'guys this is definitely one for the blog!' - cheered us all up!
7.30am - Breakfast time! Again, amazing. Omelettes, banana porridge and toast with Nutella! Definitely more substantial than yesterday's breakfast (the chickpea mush!) We were all thoroughly relieved to hear that we were getting a jeep back down the mountain as it was chucking it down - However, there was then a horrible realisation that the guides had been lying to us and we actually had to walk! To make matters worse, it wasn't safe to do the shortcut route which would have cut off 1 hour so we had to go the long way! Things got even worse when Fee and Ione went to the loo (which were mini tents with a massive hole in the ground - hand dug!) and they were greeted by stage 4's! (If you can't remember what stage 4 is it's a massive poo!)
We packed up the camp, struggled taking it all to the van and then set off on our trek. To begin with, we were all so happy as it was amazingly flat, and at this point wasn't raining. The rain didn't stay away for too long and soon it was chucking it down (again). The terrain was very rocky and very steep and Ione and Tess were holding hands with each other most of the way helping each other down (especially after Ione nearly ran off the mountain when she picked up some speed going down a slope!) and Tess ended up on her arse a few times shouting 'I hate this trek!'.
We eventually reached a waterfall where we had lunch and Emma and Fee decided to go in with all their clothes on!
FINALLY we reached the bottom where everyone looked like drowned rats, and even our fingers had shrivelled up from the rain. Two jeeps picked us up and drove us back to our 'hotel'.
We were 1200 metres high & the trek took about 6 hours up and 4 hours down.
As you can imagine we can't feel our legs today and we are all absolutely shattered.
We have all had showers now (never felt so amazing) and we are feeling clean & dry again! However, seeing as the plugs are so dodgy here, Georgie tried to fix one of them with a pair of tweezers after just coming out of the shower.....HELLO ELECTRIC SHOCK! (Blonde moment!) Alison - you'll be glad to hear she is fine & coping well rescuing cockroaches from the bathroom every night!
It was fun and we are glad we made it to the top & down again, but definitely glad it's over! (Sal, Kate and Alison you all would've had heart attacks if you saw us struggling down the edges of mountains with sheer drops below us!)
Lots of love to you all as always and please post your comments! - we are all off to have some well deserved food - pizza and pasta tonight! xxx
