I have left Cambodia without malaria. Winnnnnn! However, I land in Thailand and acquire a lot of legal drugs (see picture).Yes they are all for me! 8 antibiotics a day and two anti inflammatory creams, but oh my god, what a palaver trying to sort it all out!
When I said before it was going to be a bad day, well I must have a sixth sense because it was about to get worse once I had landed..
I knew I had some Thai baht left on me from before I went to Cambodia so when it cost me to see a doctor for my knee I knew I'd be okay! Then when he prescribes me enough pain and anti inflammatory creams to sort both my knees I knew I needed to add up my change. To see a doctor cost 550 baht. I had 548. Obviously! So I checked if I could pay with my card which was fine.. Especially as all the drugs come to 1300 baht!! So I give the woman my card, it doesn't work, I give her another card, that still doesn't work. You can imagine now I wasn't really in the mood, after the rubbish morning and the pain of me knee I was wanting to kindly launch my card at her. The only option was for me to get money out which was fine. So I take just my purse and get enough money. Now ATM machines in Asia give you your money before your card so you need to be paying attention. Today I wasn't! So I take my money and walk/hobble to the hospital to pay.. now as I handed the money over it dawned on me I didn't pick up my bank card so as quick as I could I hobbled back to the ATM praying my card was there. Guess what happened!? Yeahhh it wasn't there! So I become hysterical trying to make a Thai security guard understand what had happened. The problem was even though I said the machine hadn't given my card back I couldn't be sure as I had walked away.. So another Thai man who could understand and speak better English told me there was a bank up in the airport and they would be able to help! So I go up, explain again without trying to cry and embarrass myself and he called an engineer. Now is when I needed the luck of the Buddha! What was, without doubt, the longest 15 minutes of my life the engineer comes in and checks my passport against the card that the machine had swallowed!!
I AM ONE LUCKY GIRL! I tell you what, there is definitely someone watching over me! So, calm was restored and an important life lesson learnt.. If you have five hours to waste, don't go to a hospital that you have to pay for the drugs, maybe just check in for your next flight and sit in departures where you can't touch, spend or break anything!!
ps.. It is one of those events we can all sit and laugh at, together, because I am still a twat.. even thousands of miles away!
