Hello everyone!
We are now in Luang Prabang, it took 7 hours to get here on a less than savoury bus - not helped by the the young local girl who hitched a lift for a short time and sat next to chris who promptly threw up everywhere . . . Mmm nice.
The roads were mostly dirt tracks up the side of a mountain so appart from the stunning scenery it was a bit of a white knuckle affair. Our driver wasn't too bad he only attempted to drive into other vehicles 2 or 3 times. . . It was very hot too so I was quite glad when chris managed to force the window open.
We were glad to be off the bus as you can imagine - after a short tuk tuk ride into town we were in luang prabang. Every night there is a market that fills the main street which is lovely when you don't have to battle through it with a big rucksack. We were quite tired and hot by this point so we plumped for staying in a family run - cheap - guesthouse . . . Let's just say it was ok for one night. There was about 7 years worth of dust on every surface!
So in the morning we upped sticks and found somewhere nicer for not too much more - which had air con! We spent the day climbing up Phou Si mound to the stupa at the top, we saw the bigest beetle ever on the way up - I stopped looking for wildlife at this point just incase I spotted an 8 legged beast. The views over the Mekong river were spectacular though.
In the afternoon we visited the Palace Museum to look at the former royal families home and belongings. There were lots of highly decorated celings - using mirror tiles and gold paint. Got a stiff neck from looking up too much.
The museum is also home to the Pha bang budda after whom the town is named.
We spent the evening wandering round the market and eating too much.
Today we have rented bikes - we have been pootling around for a couple of hours stopping to take photos of all the temples on the way (there are lots of temples here) now we are contemplating lunch.
Were not sure at the moment when or how we will be getting to Bangkok due to the severe flooding in the area - we know we can't do it by train as the northern lines have been shut. . . Will keep you posted. (Chris recons we should cycle . . .)
Bye x Team P

Steve Taylor I think Chris may have a good idea. I suggest you train a pack of dogs to pull your cycles or sled. After all the dogs probably have an incentive to escape!!
