We arrived in Chitwan in a beautiful setting with cute little cabins near the river… On the first day we cycled to an elephant breeding center where there was a three-day-old elephant – so cute!! We thought it would be breeding to let them into the wild but they were doing so for the tourists, which we were unconvinced about. It was great to see the baby as it’s rare to see one so young but they were all chained up & didn’t look at all happy… Also, the main way they were breeding was because a wild elephant kept breaking in mating with them all (and it only lasts 1minute!!) - crazy ‘breeding program’ if you ask me! In the evening we all went to eat together & ended up getting really drunk! Carl, Dom, Alison & Cam were dancing like loonies & got all the other people in the restaurant, including the staff up and dancing to the Vengaboys!! Great night out! The next day we went trekking into the jungle! We started the trip with a canoe ride along the river and saw HUGE crocodiles and loads of birds on the way and were then taught how to run away from various wild animals such as rhino, tigers and elephants, just in case!!! We trekked all day & only, kinda saw one rhino snuffling around in the bushes – still got really excited though! We saw a monitor lizard, monkeys, big red bugs & loads of deer too & that night we slept in small tin shacks along the river! Linda fell off a log into the river which was very funny as she was so wet… instead of Carl helping her he just took photos! Up early the next day to try and see rhino again but we couldn’t see them! We stopped off in a crocodile breeding centre, actually putting them back in the wild & at the back of the center there was a wild tiger in a cage… There was a story about how its mother had started eating humans in the village & was had to be killed so they had the tiger as an orphan & because it had eaten human flesh it could not be released into the wild… On the way back in the jeeps we suddenly stopped & saw two rhino over the river in the distance! Very exciting stuff! Even better though… when we arrived back at the hotel we went for Chi (Indian Tea) along the river & all of a sudden two mating rhinos came running out of the bushes on the other side of the river right in front of us!!! They were covered in blood as they chase each other for days until the male finally gives in & lets the female mate with him! Seeing the Rhino in Chitwan was an amazing part of the tour… Loved trekking through the jungle too… Kathmandu, here we come… Bec & Carl x x
