Hola!!
I hope you are well!! Chris and I are doing well and again just sitting and watching a movie on television after a long day.
Yesterday was a very low key day. There are so many open markets in the city during the weekend that we decided to just walk around and enjoy the beautiful day. There was a market just a couple of blocks away from our apartment that we spent most of our time at. They had everything from antiques to jewelry and clothes, all very reasonable. I ended up buying a black sweater that can be dressy or casual, as I didn't realize how chilly it would be here some days. We had lunch outside right on one of the main streets, a perfect location for people watching. I had a caesar salad (I wanted to see what it was like here, and well it was really "anchovy") and Chris had a traditional breaded veal with mashed potatoes (delicious). We were planning on going out last night to "party" with the locals, however, a MAJOR thunder and lightning storm rolled in about 8:30, and there was torrential downpours the entire night. At one point, I was woken up by the thunder alone that felt as it shook our building...quite interesting though it really didn't seem out of the ordinary to the locals.
We woke up fairly early this morning and decided on heading toward a market that was about 45 minutes away (by train) that was supposedly a "must see" with almost no tourists. Called "Feria de Mataderos," it is a busting market filled with smoking grills, hand crafted artisan crafts, tango dancers, and live music. As predicted, we saw almost no tourists, however, the American accent did catch our ears a couple of times. It was extremely interesting and delicious! So many fresh empanadas, and "chorisopan" (fresh grilled sausage). While the ride there was long it was certainly worth it- not only for the food and atmosphere, but also because it forced us to learn the subway system (which actually is easier than New York). I also ended up buying a pair of traditional Argentinean walking shoes. For those of you that know the brand "Toms" these were the shoes that the creator based his design off of. However, mine were only $4...while his are selling for $50/pair, granted quality is probably better......
When we got home I was not feeling so well, so I laid down for a nap. I still feel so/so right now, but I am hoping it passes by morning. Tomorrow is a national holiday, so most likely everything will be closed. We are planning to go see the Japanese Botanical gardens, and than we will probably just lay out in our neighborhood park for the rest of the day.
We Miss you All and I will write soon again!!!
xoxo,
Sarah and Chris
