we are on our way to Vang Vieng in a couple of hours. we left the 4,000 islands (S i Phan Don) and had to stop back in Pakse for a few hours till our overnight bus ride to the capital, Vientiane.
we stayed on Don Det island. we arrived at around 10 am, and it was incredibly hot. we walked to the north of the island to find our guesthouse. the island was very small and very quiet. the endangered "irrawaddy" dolphins apparently live around these islands, but the boat trips were a bit expensive. we headed back to the mainland and made our way back to Pakse.
we got to Vientiane at 5:45 am. took a tuk-tuk into the center of town to the Nam Phu statue. luckily we found a guesthouse that let us check-in early, so it was straight back to bed.
Vientiane wasnt quite what we expected. i guess we thought for a capital, it would be pretty busy and lots of people. here that is not the case.
there are tons of Wats here though, and tons of monks wandering around in their bright orange cloaks. the city is nice and our guesthouse is right on the river. we ate at the riverside food vendors every night. its great, you eat and then lay down on the cushions! last night i had the hottest chicken dish ever. i could only eat 4 bites and then john ate the rest. my mouth was throbbing.
so we are off this morning, we had breakfast at an amazing Scandanavian Bakery (2nd time in 2 days). just waiting for our bus to Vang Vieng now!!
