My Cat's Among the Tourists roadtrip was cancelled due to my roadtrip accomplice falling ill with the flu, so there I was with a car and not sure whether I was up to the drive by myself from Nottingham to Torquay and then back up to Edinburgh in about 4 days turn around time. As this was my last weekend in Nottingham will my girls, four of us decided to take a road trip to see the sea :). We had Tommy, who I am still not always happy with, to guide us. When picking up the car we asked for a recommendation on going to either Skegness or Hull. The guy there recommended Hull as the water is apparently washwater yucky in Skegness and near Hull is a lovely little town called Beverley. So we punch in Hull to Tommy and off we go :) Chloe riding shotgun again as my trusty navigator (to keep Tommy honest) and Amel and her friend in the back seat.
A lot of laughter ensued when Chloe mentioned Hull at one point and Amel thought she said that we were going to Hell - french accents I don't know... Anyway Amel was quite insistent that she did not want to go to Hell. When we arrived there the weather was pretty dismal but we parked and went to find a place to eat. We found the McCall's Cafe and were very impressed with the food and the prices. Not so impressed when we left and it was pretty much a torrential downpour. So we took some quick picks and decided to get the heck out of Hull/hell.
About this time we also realized that we had not made it to the sea yet. Hull is in the mouth of a river leading inland. So a quick look at google maps on my phone and Tommy had us deciding between Bridlington and Aldbrough. As the day was getting late we chose Albrough as it was closer. Little did we know that Tommy would take us here.
In an aside I should note that Tommy is a sat nav and I do not recommend trying to drive around the UK without one unless you have a very good memory for names and have a navigator that enjoys being kept very busy. I just enjoy being able to turn Tommy off when he annoys me, or replanning when I want to go somewhere else.
The sea road was a bit disturbing as we drove up to it as there were a lot of road closed signs and barricades. Pictures to be included. We decided not to climb down and enjoy the beach as we were not that keen to take our life in our own hands after laughing over our Hull/hell fiasco. It was a lovely beach though, all unexploded ordnances aside, and we had a lot of debate about why the road crumbled down to the beach. Apparently erosion is a major concern in this area and there is not much that can be done about it. Hotels and houses have been lost to this unfortunate but natural factor. The sea here was not overly clear but when you factor in erosion it is easy to understand why the water looked muddy. I will post more pics so that you can see the area. There is a trailer park close to the edge and considering the speed of erosion here I am not all that surprised anymore.
Well it was a lovely little road trip and the rest of the weekend was spent recovering from a migraine before heading north to visit friends in Edinburgh :)
Until next time... May God hold you in the palm of his hand :)
I always loved that Irish blessing :)
