We've finally made it!!!!
So we arrived here on the 14th of October and checked into staff accommodation, which is basic but cheap, close to the village and with everything we need. We have two really great roommates. Grub (Caroline) and Dave - they did not know eachother before arriving here though. Suprisingly they are both from Australia also... well not that suprisingly really as this entire town is made up of Aussies! Apparently Australia Day here is one of the biggest days of the year along with New Years!! Staff housing (or House) is about 10 4-story buildings each with about 50 rooms and usually 4 people per room. We have therefore met loads of people and had some really great times!!
The first week we got here, the 4 of us (Grub, Dave, Tav and I), hired mountain bikes and biked through the Whistler wilderness. For those who don't know much about Whistler, it is a world class outdoor adventure playground - especially for mountain biking in the summer and skiing/snowboarding in the winter. Our mountain biking was quite relaxed however and we biked to a beautiful lake.
The next activity was a hike to Lost Lake and a BBQ lunch on a Saturday arvo. Lost Lake is a beautiful spot with a huge grass area, beach, gorgeous lake and snow capped mountain backdrop. We took down a soccer ball and started kicking it around with about 5 of us. After a bit the group grew to about 10 and we then started up a game. By the end there were about 10 people per side. It was heaps of fun playing soccer in the park and we all actually got a pretty good sweat up! The game lasted for about 3 hours and there were many slips and falls, lots of grass stains, bruisers and even an accidental kick to the head!! (Yep Miranda accidently kicked Tav's noggin!! Just a small lump and red mark! Woops!)
We had an arranged dodge ball night also during the first week here. This was SO much fun!!! We all dressed up like in the movie with long socks and headbands. Before the games started we noticed a few people stretching up and we were laughing at them cause they were taking it too seriously! We then spent about 2 hours in dodge ball battle and then wandered home laughing at the hillariously fun game! The next day we realised that the guys stretching were the smart ones... as our entire bodies were killing for 5 days straight!!!
A few of us went to The Cat Empire concert here in Whistler. Over here they were advertising for them as the Number 1 Australian band! We couldn't believe that! But anyway the concert was a sell out. They were pretty good and are awesome musicians. We only knew about 2 of the songs that they played but we had a great night anyway!
Poker has become a frequent passtime here in our building. It is $5 to play and the winner takes all. Tav took the $40 pot the other night and Miranda played her first game the other night and was actually runner-up!!!
Happy Halloween!!! Yep it was Halloween here a couple of nights ago and it is a huge event over here! The buses all had candy in the front and everyone was dressed up during the day and of course the night! We all got dressed up during the arvo (Miranda as a devil/witch and Tav as Bubble Man). We didn't want to spend too much on our costumes so we went to a $2 store and picked up a few things. We found bubble wrap for cheap and decided to wrap Tav up... needless to say he was the hit of the night with everyone picking him out and getting photos with him because he was so different!!! It was a fantastic night out, especially as everyone was dressed up and having fun. The next day however was very quiet with many sore heads!!
We have both scored jobs with the Whistler/Blackcomb Mountain. Tav is a Rental Technician at the Chateau Fairmont where he will fit peoples ski's and boards. Miranda is working as a bistro worker (waitress) at Dusty's Backside which is a section of one of the busiest bars in town. We start work in about 2 weeks which will be fantastic as we will finally have money coming in instead of constantly going out!! Working for the Mountain has loads of perks: we get a free season lift pass (worth almost $2000), huge clothing discounts, massive ski and snow board discounts, food and bar discounts and contacts about the place which help us to score even more cheap stuff. We have picked up our staff passes so tomorrow we are hitting the shops to get out ski and boarding gear!!
We have been waiting anxiously for snow.. the sooner it comes the sooner we can get up on the mountain to ski and also the sooner we will start work. The other morning we woke up to a girl screaming "Wake up everyone, it's SNOWING!!". We all jumped out of bed and looked outside at a blanket of white covering everything and huge snow flakes falling from the sky!! We all jumped out our window in our PJ's and had a snow fight. It was very exciting! The snow pretty much all melted though by the end of the day :-(
Patience we know... the snow will come and cover the mountains and the ski runs!!!
