Florianopolis is a fairly large and bustling Island (accessible by road) in the South of Brazil famous for being a beach hotspot. We stayed on the quieter side in Barra de Lagoa so that we could just chill out for a couple of days and recharge the batteries after being on no fewer than 9 buses in total in the last 24 hours to get there from Iguazu. The hostel was located in a back-street off the main road running through the town, and we had to walk past about 10 crazy dogs bellowing at us from various homes before we got there which was pretty funny at first but never failed to make me jump at least once unexpectedly each time we walked past them. The hostel was a nice quaint little building covered in bush, more like a cottage than anything, and we were the only ones there funnily enough so we had the place to ourselves to muck around. This was all well and good till the owner left at night and gave us the responsibility of locking up and holding the fort till she got back in the morning. I mean it was fine with us but pretty damn weird that someone would be so trusting of 2 filthy backpackers. It seemed like the setup of some B-horror movie (which seems to happen a lot with us) where 2 travelers are left alone in a creepy hostel at night and some twisted freak living in the basement tries to kill them. But the night passed incident free and the lady was so nice that we didn't really care about the whole setup. Anyway so whilst in Florianopolis we spent the first day cruising around the main town, stocking up on essentials, and then we went to one of the beaches for sunset, where the wind blowing sand in streaks into the sea made for some pretty kickass effects in our photos. The next day we visited some massive sand dunes and mooched about there watching people sand-boarding, some better than others, not trying our luck given the state of some people after a few wipeouts. We saw one stupid backpacker dislocate his shoulder and then try and pop it back in the way they do in the movies by just hitting hit. Godamn idiot. We also went to another beach where we had yet another all you can eat lunch buffet (becoming an alarming regularity by that point) but didn't bother swimming because it wasn't particularly sunny and the sea was choppy as hell (although in hindsight nothing compared to the sea in Rio). So that's pretty much it for Florianopolis, just a short relaxing stay for us to chill-out and regain some energy for the inevitable frenzy of Sao Paulo and of course Rio coming up.
