Manali to Leh
We spent a couple of days in Manali relaxing, eating pizza and getting the bike fixed after which we set off on the high altitude road to Leh. Our first day was cut short, stopping at Keylong as the bike needed new clutch plates, which we burnt out on the muddy road to the summit of the Rohtang Pass.
Day 2 saw us leave Keylong with the vague idea of getting to Leh by the end of the day. Everything started pretty well and we made it over the Baralacha La (4950m) without too much difficulty, but the weather closed in on us over the Lachulung La and we endured an hour of hail and strong winds before calling it a day and stopping for the night in a tent camp at Pang which sits 180k and a 5360m pass from Leh.
Yesterday (25th) we set off early in the morning and were soon at the top of the world's second highest motorable pass, the Tanglang La. The road from the summit to Leh steadily improved and we reached the city by about lunchtime. After some navigational difficulties around the city we finally found a suitable guesthouse, the owner of which helped us get our bike fixed again (rear brake).
Today we plan to leave for Lumayuru, a little village on the road to Srinigar. Tomorrow we aim to head south towards Zanskar for the village of Ramdung to see the Nun Kun Massif and surrounding glaciers, before heading back to the Leh-Srinigar Road on Tuesday, hopefully reaching Srinigar on Wednesday when we will be in touch again. No pictures at the moment unfortunately as the internet is expensive and slow but we will be sure to update you soon.
