National Park Tongariro Alpine Crossing, BLue Duck Station and Wellington
National Park, New Zealand
The day started with a 0530 rise, we were on the bus by 6am to head into national park and the trail head of the tongariro alpine crossing, one of the worlds best day hikes. Once kitted up with cramp ons, waterproof layers, hats, gloves, ice picks and gaters we set off on our 20km him through the mountins, the walk took about 8 hours and we crossed some volcanic plateaus of north islands highest mountin, the active volcanic peak of mount ruapehu, mount ngauruhow and mount tongariro , otherwise known as mount doom and mourdoor from lord of the rings films. The hike was tough, climbing up the face of the volcanoe in the snow and ice. one at the top, the views were amazing and we had a little fun sleding down a little slope on our bums before putting our cramp ons ready for the decent down which was really steep. We had to take it slow, leaning back quite far so not to slide down using our ice picks. Was scary but really fun. After we had finished the hike we headed to our lodge and relaxed in the hot tub!!!
The next day we made our way to blue duck station, a large working farm and conservation area in the bush. Activites were goat hunting, clay shooting, blue duck spotting and relaxing in the amazing surroundings. the place was amazing, one of my faveourite loacations.
Wellington was our last stop in North Island, we went to see a film called moonrise kingdom which was really good and also visited the museum which was really interesting.
