Go The BEERFEST!! A group from Belushis, Edinburgh caught up in Munich on September 30, 2003.
The vibe you feel as soon as you step into the Beerfest site - it's amazing! And the SMELL!!! Like Peanut Brittle - it's all toffee, sugar, and nuts... it's a great smell and it coats everything everywhere you go. No smell of sour beer! And the colours, the noise, the rides, the flashing lights, the dodgy old German men singing at 11am, the pointy hats and novelty items!!! So great!!
Well, apparantley I was there! And supposedly I had a good time.... there were just a few blank spots to contend with!! ...
After BOTH flights being delayed, Dave and I reached our hostel in Munich (advertised as 'ecologically friendly'!!) and walked straight into Lee (from Belushis)!! A couple of beers later and we crashed out. - The best thing about Germany - HUGE bottles of beer for sale in vending machines... bloody tasty and really cheap.
Lee, Trin, Dave and I (and a random guy named Mike) spent the Wednesday at Dachau Concentration Camp, which was an experience. It's one of those things you really can't describe.
Everything was pretty much as-left - watchtowers, barbed wire fences, hanging posts...
We went through the shower rooms (aka: torture rooms - where the prisoners were bull-whipped and "poled" - hung backwards by their arms). Also through the prisoner's barracks, the crematoriums, the gas chambers - everything, including gas piping, was still intact. The room smelt dodgy and you could feel traces of fear and death in the place. Terrifying.
After that, we were pretty amping for a beer!! And by the STEIN, thank you!! None of those p**** pint thingies in Munich! We met up with Kayci and Cam and some more randoms at Marienplatz. We headed to the famous Munich beer hall - HOFFBRAUHAUS. Got steaming drunk, ate great pork knuckles, and got abused by the waiter - fantastic!
Next day - BEEREFT! No-one could remember where to meet, so we stumbled in the Lowenbrau tent at 10.30am - lo and behold there were Cam and Kayci sat right in the middle of the action, right in front of the band! Yay for us!
Was feeling a bit rotten, the first stein of the day took me two hours to get through. After that though it was all on! Ian also caught up with us, and we all spread our time between the Lowenbrau tent, the Paullaner tent with Ian and his mates, and some other tent. It was a great day and night!! I remember all of us singing Ned songs, and dancing on the tables. Ian started a fight with a bull-whipper and somehow Dave got a blood nose... but it was all good!
Had a massive ball wish I could do it again... the only thing I am really gutted about is the fact that I missed out on the rides... Dave got drunk too early! Also I had two massive steins chucked in my tiny day pack so we went back to the hostel before the scary German police could find the contraband.... a night in a german prison didn't sound like a sound holiday experience to me!
Helpful hint: spend more than three days in Munich during the beerfest - you'll run out of time because, face it, you'll be drunk or hungover most of the time!
