I learned quickly that you can't return anything in Italy. Once you buy it, it's yours. You can't change your mind.
I came to Italy in hopes I'd change some bad habits. My being impulsive was not one of them. So when I bought a camera for over 300 euro that I later realized I didn't like, I thought to return it only to learn that I couldn't.
America makes it easy for people to do something on the fly. It always seems we can do something about it tomorrow. But over here it doesn't work like that. So now I know that thinking about something before doing it might actually be a useful tool in life, or at least in Europe.
My apartment is 1 block away from the Ponte Vecchio and about a 5 minute walk from the Duomo. Every time I walk out of my apartment, I feel like I am in a scene from Before Sunset. Unfortunately Julie Delpy isn't with me.
For those of you who care to know-- which actually is most of you-- I got drunk in a local bar in Florence. Funny, I walk out of the bar and in my mildly drunken stupor realize that I am right outside of the Cathedral. I ask Heather, "look, I am not a Catholic and I make one hell of a s***ty Jew, but isn't it a little weird having a bar right outside of a cathedral?" I then sobered up.
A cop gave all of us a lecture during orientation. He said many things about pick-pocketing and assault and "wrong behaviors" that consist of sitting on monuments etc...and then he said that the National Men's Sport of Italy is WOMEN. I never thought of us as "game". He told all the women to be very careful. My mom told me to be very careful too, my being gay makes me a target. But so far I must say it has been the biggest blessing. I haven't had my ass grabbed or my arms pulled. So maybe the next time I walk past the cathedral, I'll go in and thank god for making me a dyke.
Aside from that, I almost bought goats milk instead of cows milk. My legs are now made of steel from all this walking. Gelato on the Ponte Vecchio cost me 10 euro. And if I ever bring myself to go into one of the stores near my apartment, I won't be able to afford a ticket back to the states, let alone a loaf of bread.
I miss you all and am thinking of you. Check out all the pictures I was finally able to post. And hopefully I'll hear from you all soon!!!
Ciao!!!
