We arrived in Trujillo to begin our 3 weeks voluntary work working with street kids. The organization we are working for is bruce peru www.bruceperu.com and aims to get kids off the street and into mainstream schools so they have a chance to get an education and consequently a career rather than begging or working the streets from the age of 5. My first day I was completely thrown in at the deep end as one of the volunteers was off sick. Each volunteer is paired with a Peruvian school teacher and the volunteers basically go into the schools and teach the younger or less advanced students Spanish language and maths. We also feed the children and for some it is the only meal they will get all day. The fact that we provide food is usually a big incentive for the kids to come into school every day. Most of the kids are abused or neglected and rape is very common.
A typical day is to be up and ready at 8am and preparing the kids food which is bread with some sort of spread. We then all disperse and go to our schools to teach from 9am and usually arrive back at the centre at 12.30pm for lunch. The afternoons you have free and in the evenings you may be asked to teach English to peruvian students that pay to learn the language however as there were a lot of volunteers at the time Jen and I arrived we only had to take one class. Huanchaco is the nearest surf town and so Jen and I would generally head there in the afternoons to surf or sunbathe. There are a lot of volunteers in Trujillo working on numerous projects and for different organizations so there are plenty of people to hang out with when you are not working. It has definitely been the best experiences I have had so far on this trip and I feel I have made a difference to some of the kids lives here. I will definitely miss the kidsthey are so affectionate towards us I hope their future brings happiness for them. There were 9 volunteers in total and we all got along well and will stay in touch...so you never know i may return here one day. Will definately also miss the lads from The Wave (the surf club) where Jen and I have learnt to surf and also the salsa dancing which is a definate must if you ever come to south america. Next stop cusco and the inca trail!!!
