Now the sunburn has worn off it´s time to do another journal. I also realised I missed out some crucial elements in the last entry... I forgot to mention that we all (well most of us) had a salsa lesson whilst in Punta Sal which was hilarious. It basically ended up as a bit of a shambles but I did learn a few of the steps, not sure I´ll ever use them again can´t imagine they´d go down too well in Rhino, but you never know.
Some of the group went deep sea fishing so they caught Tuna and some other fish which is local to here which we then cooked on the beach bonfire we made and ate with chips. Defintely the freshest fish and chips I´ve ever had! The following day I was feeling extremely lazy from just lying around on the beach getting a tan or a (bit of a burn) so I actually went for a run along the beach! Took me 30 minutes which I thought was quite a good effort as it was still quite hot at 5pm. I celebrated by having a beer the minute I got back!
I also forgot to mention that on our 14 hour road journey ants decided to eat my sandwiches! And eventhough I ate ants in the jungle (of which I have a picture as proof) I dfidn´t fancy eating these ones so instead I ate a whole bag of plaintain chips, good effort.
Anyway back to the present, well present ish. A group of us did sleep out on the beach in our sleeping bags on Saturday evening but it was so hot as I didn´t want to come out of my sleeping bag incase I got eaten by mossies. It was very cool thought to look up and see the stars just before you go to sleep. We´re going sandboarding in a few days time and then sleeping out on sandunes so that should be equally as good.
After leaving the beach we had a 10 hour drive to another beach! It´s such a hard life! This time Huanchaco which wasn´t as nice but it´s close to the ruins of Chan Chan and Huaca de la luna both of which are old Peruvian ruins, one of a settlement and the other of a pyramid. It was actually quite cool to see but must admit it did go on a little, once you´ve seen once mud triangle you´ve kinda seen them all... I know it goes against the idea of immersing yourself in culture but it did take about 5 hours to go around the 2 ruins with our guide who was very thorough!
After that we were in desperate need of some food and retail therapy so we went to what is apparently the best supermarket in South America. It was quite impressive to be fair but I was more impressed with the Pizza Hut we found there!
I wasnt too impressed with Huanchaco to be honest, it may have been because the weather was really overcast so the beach front and the pier looked more like Brighton than Peru! I also had a bit of a dodgey stomach as well which seems to have hit everyone at some point over the last 2 weeks, even had a night without any beer which until that point was unheard of! Donçt worry equilibrium is now restored and Im back on it!
We arrived in Lima, the capital of Peru last night after a long stint of the waving game with the Peruvian locals! It basically involves finding people who look really miserable and trying to get them to wave back at you, very immature I know but we had been on the bus for 10 hours and so far the roads in Peru have been so boring, just plain flat sand most of the way. The wave game is actually quite satisfying when they wave back, we even managed to get a guy who was riding moped and texting at the same time to wave back at us! Anyway Lima looked beautiful as the square has lots of colonial buildings which were all lit up. We are staying in quite a nice hostal, such a relief after camping for about the last 6 or 7 nights and my back is playing up again. I went to pharmacy today and managed in broken English to get some form of tablets, no idea what they are but they dont seem to be doing much... Never mind its nearly time for a beer!
Talking of beer, last night we went for a really nice meal on the square, I had a massive steak and even splashed out on some red wine! We then went to a bar we had seen earlier which looked good. When we arrived it was empty so we automatically made friends with some random guys who were apparently Peruvian musicians. Before we knew it 2 pitchers of beer appeared, which we hadnt ordered but drank anyway. Then jugs of pisco sours which is the local cocktail drink, its a bit like a mojito but without the mint, started arriving on the table again which we hadnt ordered... There were 8 of us out and jug after jug kept coming out. Jokingly someone said oh we must have one each. We did. They then wouldnt take them back as we had asked for pisco sours, but we obviously didnt want jugs just glasses! They clearly saw the gringos coming and thought theyd just make up jugs of them and make us pay for them! As they wouldnt take them back there was only one thing to do, drink them! We all ended up getting hammered on these and playing drinking games. We were also given complementary, I should think so, double shots of tequila! It was a really good night and even thoguh we got completely conned, 2 pitchers of beer, double shots of tequila each and 6 pitchers of pisco sours only actually cost us about a tenner each. Definitely dont get that at home! Think I then made my back worse as one of the girls and I discovered that you can get onto the roof of our hotel so we went up and were doing our best mission impossible impressions, seemed like a good idea at the time...
Today weve been doing the tourist bit and have been to Lima Cathedral, San Domingo Church and the China Town. We decided to give the museums a miss. The Cathedral was really good, San Domingo was ok and China Town stank! We were trying to find a market which s supposed to be there but we only came across a market selling the most god awful giant illuminous polysterine winnie the poohs and tiggers! It was like being in Taiwan, weird.
Tonight were off bowling, but I doubt I will bowl becaude of my back. Should be a laugh watching everyone else though! Tomorrow we are off to Nazca to see the Nazca lines, if any of you have seen the latest Indiana Jones its in there. However, I wont be taking the flight over them as last month they had 1 crash and 3 emergency landings on motorways, prob not the best safety record!
Best be off now as this was quite a long entry, youre probably bored by now and I could do with a beer! Let me know what you are all up to...... Hasta luego XX
