Tom & Jo's Excellent Adventure
Well, as you all know we missed the earthquake in Java by a whisker - 3 days was more than close enough for us. I'm convinced I (Tom) felt the tremor in Surabaya about 5 hours East of the epicentre!!! Anyway we have since gone back to Bali and flown on to Labuanbajo. The flight was a bit scary, mainly because it is the first prop passenger plane either of us has been in. Sitting next to the propellor was a bit nerve racking and the noise was like being in a hoover!!! We made it safely though. The plan was to travel east through some of Flores, but instead we headed straight out to a tiny island for 3 nights and there were only ever 8 people max in 4 (of the 10) bungalows lining the beach!! The food was amazing and the only things we could do all day was read, eat, drink, and spend endless hours snorkelling over the amazing coral reef!!!! We both hated the place so from there we headed to Komodo to visit the DRAGONS! By the way, we didn't really hate the island! We actually did a 4 day boat from Flores to Lombok (which turned out to be 3 in the end) which took in Komodo, Rinca and a small bit of Sumbawa + lots of little unnamed islands for swimming!! The dragons were a bit on the scary side, especially when you have to wait for the nod from the ranger before you can pass them. It's ok if they attack, apparently you run in zigzags and they can't! We made friends with a Canadian couple, Jon and Sheri, and a guy from Fleet called Ron. Just 5 on the boat and 6 crew members! All in the boat was a good choice over the 36 hour bus journey, but the sailing through the night bit was a bit uncomfortable - you felt like you should be tiring yourself to the boat to not fall out, but then again you don't want to be tied to a boat that's sinking do you !!!???? Again, thanks to Indonesian transport we've had the s*** scared out of us but lived to tell the tale!!
