Did an overnight bus trip from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado on the 14th March, bus was okay but at about 330am we came to a stop and sat there for just over 2 hours due to some sort of road block. Instead of arriving at 730am we finally got there at 1030am. Left 9 degrees in Cusco to 32 degrees in Puerto Maldonado.
Puerto Maldonado sits on the Tambopata River, we caught a boat 2.5 hours to Refugio Lodge. The river is brown due to amounts of sediment it carries, as we cruised along the river we stopped to look at macaws and capybaras. We ate fried rice wrapped in banana leaf on the way. Very relaxing.
The lodge is amazing, the reception / dining / bar / lounge are is one large space with no walls. Our room has no door, just a curtain and only 3 walls, one end of the room is completely open. Our beds have full nets for sleeping to keep out all the creepy crawleys. No electricity in rooms, just has gas lamps from 6pm to 9pm. The main dining lounge area has electricity from 6pm to 9pm only.
After dinner we went back out on the river to spot caiman, saw 3. They camouflage really well and are quite small. The moon was just off a full moon, so beautiful out on the river.
Lodge was so peaceful, only sounds were of the rainforest, had an amazing sleep.
