Perhaps one of the most interesting tools of the trade, that existed before the widespread use of toilet paper, was called the chuugi (籌木) (pictured). As nothing more than a delicately shaped stick, chuugi were used in the appropriate fashion to clear away waste and then disposed of afterwards.
