My secret hotspot and tip for all of you guys travelling up the east coast in Australia - Port Stephens!
Had 4 days off work during the Easter Holidays and decided to get out of Sydney and go to Port Stephens. Most backpackers travelling up the east coast make the mistake of going up directly from Sydney to Byron Bay, not realising what amazing places there are on the way. PORT STEPHENS is on of those places!
Just 3 hours north from Sydney is a place called Newcastle - catch the Greyhound bus up there and then change to the local bus which will take you to Port Stephens in 45 minutes. Voila - you're in paradise! P.S. I love you!
You will never run out of things to do at Port Stephens:
1) See dolphins and whales. Port Stephens is called the Dolphin Capital of Australia because the bay is home to around 150 bottlenose dolphins. In the winter between May and June, humpback whales cruise past the town on their northern migration, returning south between September and November.
2) Diving and snorkelling. Port Stephens has a lot of shipwrecks around and very abundant life in the water. Some experienced divers have been known to move to Port Stephens because of the awesome diving - that's how good it is!
3) Surfing - good waves for surfing. Enough said.
4) Hiking. Beautiful nature and beaches guarantee good hikes along the area.
5) Wildlife. Wild koalas are not a rare site in the area!
6) Wineries. Why not go wine tasting in the area?! You won't be disappointed.
7) Sandboarding. Go sandboarding at the amazing sand dunes
The place to stay is Melauleuca backpackers - owned by two couples Mick&Michelle, Pete&Jeanette, the nicest people you will ever meet. These guys will do everything to make sure you will enjoy your stay. Melaleuca in Port Stephens, with it's cabins in this tranquil area with natural bushland. Koalas are hanging out in the trees, kangaroos jump around in the garden, the beach is just across the road. The point is that you can do as much or as little as you like in the area. People go up for a few days and end up staying for weeks. Go and see it for yourself!
