This is the entry from Cape Conran and Wilson's Promontory that never was; thanks to both places being overrun with swarms of March flies, making it impossible to enjoy their natural beauty.
We made a hasty exit from
Cape Conran and found refuge in a lovely boating town on the Gippsland Lakes, which so happened to have an awesome name! Paynesville was a great place from which to explore the lakeside villages, such as Metung, and the city of Bairnsdale, home to the spectacular St Mary's Church. The ceiling and walls of the church are painted with magnificent murals thanks to an Italian artist who was out of work during the Great Depression. What luck!
We had some great weather which enabled us to spend some quality family time in the pool. Both girls loved it. Angelina is turning into a real water baby. And Esther looks set to follow suit, kicking and smiling with glee.
Being in Victoria, however, meant that we got to experience more than four seasons in one day. On our final night we were hit with gale force winds, often in excess of 60kms per hour. The wind was relentless and knocked loudly at our little home all night, making for a sleepless night for all but Angelina and Esther.
We packed up slowly but safely and set off to Walhalla, a historic town, which in its heyday had 4000 goldminers as residents but now has only 20. We stopped for lunch at Tyers - an unknown little town which ought become famous for its exceptional playround. Unfortunately, some more dramas with our rig has meant an unexpected stop in Traralgon and a visit to an auto-electrician in the morning. Everyone we've encountered in Traralgon has been remarkably happy and friendly, so perhaps they'll share their secrets with us in the morrow. In the meantime, we shall enjoy an unexpected treat whilst in a metropolitan area: tv coverage!
